Last week the United Nations passed a non-binding agreement on the flow of migrants around the world called the [GLOBAL COMPACT FOR SAFE, ORDERLY AND REGULAR MIGRATION](https://www.un.org/pga/72/wp-content/uploads/sites/51/2018/07/migration.pdf).  The U.S. has already pulled out of the agreement and the Hungarian Foreign Minister has recommended to the Hungarian government that Hungary pull out as well.  Hungary sights aspects of the agreement that will lead to open borders.

After reading the document my opinion is that the U.S. and Hungarian governments are right in pulling out of the agreement.  However there are some interesting points made in the document.  Here are a few:

>OBJECTIVE 1: Collect and utilize accurate and disaggregated data as a basis for evidence-based policies
>
>g)  Improve national data collection by integrating migration-related topics in national censuses, as early as practicable, such as on country of birth, country of birth of parents, country of citizenship, country of residence five years prior to the census, most recent arrival date and reason for migrating, to ensure timely analysis and dissemination of results, disaggregated and tabulated in accordance with international standards, for statistical purposes 

The U.S. Census no longer ask about migration status but there have been recommendations that this be incorporated back into the Census.  Naturally liberals in this country oppose this and conservatives agree with it.  Now the UN is recommending it be added back.  Sounds like a good idea to me.

>OBJECTIVE  4:  Ensure  that  all  migrants  have  proof  of  legal  identity  and  adequate documentation 
>
>20.  We commit to fulfill the right of all individuals to a legal identity by providing all our nationals with proof  of  nationality  and  relevant  documentation,  allowing  national  and  local  authorities  to ascertain a migrant’s legal identity upon entry, during stay, and for return, as well as to ensure effective migration  procedures,  efficient  service provision,  and  improved  public  safety

Migrants will be required to have proof of legal identity, so to be fair we should also require citizens to have proof of legal identity.  Requiring migrants and not citizens is a form of discrimination and should not be tolerated.  It also takes away one of the main points of liberals opposing voter ID of citizens not having legal identification.  One roadblock to voter identification goes away.

>OBJECTIVE 11: Manage borders in an integrated, secure and coordinated manner 
>
>27.  We commit to manage our national borders in a coordinated manner, promoting bilateral and regional cooperation, ensuring security for States, communities and migrants, and facilitating safe and regular cross-border movements of people while preventing irregular migration. We further commit to implement border management policies that respect national sovereignty, the rule of law, obligations under international law, human rights of all migrants, regardless of their migration status, and are non-discriminatory, gender-responsive and child-sensitive.  

A border wall fits this bill.  A wall at the border would help ensure "security for States" and with immigration checkpoints would facilitate "safe and regular cross-border movements of people while preventing irregular migration".  A border wall would "respect national sovereignty" and the "rule of law", at the same time not infringe on the "human rights of migrants" and help prevent "irregular migration".  "Irregular migrants" is the term used by the UN to designate those undocumented individuals crossing the border in locations other than established check points.  The appropriate term used in the U.S. legal system is "illegal alien".

>OBJECTIVE 16: Empower migrants and societies to realize full inclusion and social cohesion
>
>32.  We commit to foster inclusive and cohesive societies by empowering migrants to become active members of society and promoting the reciprocal engagement of receiving communities and migrants in the exercise of their rights and obligations towards each other, including observance of national laws and respect for customs of the country of destination.
>
>b)  Establish comprehensive and needs-based pre-departure and post-arrival programmes that may include rights and obligations, basic language training, as well as orientation about social norms and customs in the country of destination  

Assimilation into the destination country, another great idea.  Observe laws, respect customs and even learn the language.  Let's go ahead and make English the national language of the United States.

>OBJECTIVE  19:  Create  conditions  for  migrants  and  diasporas  to  fully  contribute  to sustainable development in all countries 
>
>35.  We commit to empower migrants and diasporas to catalyse their development contributions, and to harness the benefits of migration as a source of sustainable development, reaffirming that migration is a multidimensional reality of major relevance for the sustainable development 
>i)   Cooperate with other States, the private sector and employers organizations to enable migrants and diasporas, especially those in highly technical fields and in high demand, to carry out some of their professional activities and engage in knowledge transfer in their home countries, without necessarily losing employment, residence status, or earned social benefits of countries of origin, transit and destination 

This one is pretty long.  What the UN is suggesting here is that individuals in technical fields be allowed to disseminate knowledge from one country back to their home country.  There goes the patent protections that many companies utilize to maintain a competitive advantage in their industry.  In addition, obtaining a job in a technical field often requires signing a non-disclosure document concerning trade secrets and may go as far as to limit future potential employers in the same competitive field.  Under this clause, companies would not be able to control technical information they need to maintain a competitive advantage.

Overall, this agreement on migration is a pie in the sky document full of a liberal agenda that will never be fully implemented.  While liberals in this country want to eliminate ICE, to fully comply with this document, and maintain national sovereignty, an army of individuals including border security personnel, lawyers, judges, and psychologist would be required.  The U.S. is right not to support it, Hungary would be right not to support it and hopefully other countries will come to their senses and abandon it.  Trying to implement this document would be similar to using the original TV series *Star Trek* as a guide to developing NASA.  That being said, there are some good points in the document.  Similarly, if you have ever watched the series *Star Trek*, did you noticed how much their communicators look like flip phones?
