This is a life lesson. I’ve learned the hard way but nevertheless learned it and I want to impart to my friends, family and associates. With the recent Chicago Cubs victory, putting them in the World Series for the first time in 80+ years. Many of my people I know from the Chicagoland area where I grew up are cheering for the Cubs to win. Fools!

The system is rigged against you and those who understand how to control certainly pulled the wool over people’s eyes on this one. The secret is the team to cheer for is one’s own community. The people you chose to associate yourself with. The people you work with, the people you spend time with, the people you give money to and the people that help you.

If you believe the research, which I tend to in this case, of British anthropologist Robin Dunbar, people can only maintain approximately 150 stable relationships. Which means if you fill your 150 with celebrities and athletes and cheer for them, you’re already taking out a leg from under yourself.

My team is carefully chosen. The people I work with, my friends, even the family members I chose to keep close are a choice I make. Every relationship is a choice. Choose wisely. But once you choose, be there for them as they are there for you. Cheer for them to win at every turn! Help them win! If they are down, pick them up, brush them off and let them know you're in it for the long haul and you have faith in them because it was your choice to have them on your team! Build the bonds, the trust, let them understand how important they are to the world and that if they reach their goals, it will be a win for you.

For those who cheer for a local sports team. Wonderful. But will your team help you when you lose your job? Will your team give you some insight in how to raise your children? Will they give you honest advice when you need it most?

My team will. In fact my team will help me in whatever situation I find myself in. Up to and including a nuclear war! When it comes to a situation between a stranger and myself, my team is always on my side. No matter what uniform the stranger may have on.

My team is people I’ve learned to respect, admire and cherish. Not just those who hold a position. If I’m looking for a boss or someone to work for, I only work for the best. But when I do, they are going to get my best as well. My family members are graded on the same scale. Those who earn my respect get it. People who work for me… the same way. I give them an opportunity to show me, and if they earn my respect, I help them win too! As much as I cheer for all these, my friends are my favorites! They really reflect who I am. So I treat them extra special. The friends I learn to respect are my favorites to cheer for. I love watching them win and helping them win.

My home field is where I choose to live. I live where there is a maximum of freedom. I value it greatly. But I also value a place where I have the greatest advantage. My home field is where I’m at my best. It’s very hard to beat me on my home field. Practically impossible. And every year it gets even harder. Because my team only gets stronger and even more passionate and tenacious at home. Freedom comes from self-discipline and on my home field, I am very discipline. If I need something, to know something, to learn something my home field is the pinnacle of that effort.

Some may consider me a very lucky man. I'm the luckiest, but it’s not luck, it’s my team! Take my advice! Pick your team and your home field wisely. This is who you cheer for! And if for some reason you still think I'm lucky... then from the luckiest man in the world, this is my most important advice.
