This summer and Mary spent a couple of weeks in Calabria to her parents place and on the way back, we stopped by in Foglianise, a very small village close to Benevento (Italy). 

We arrived the exact day of the huge celebration of grains. This celebration goes back centuries and it’s a very big tradition for local people. Locals get dressed typically and they make a parade through the streets of the village. 

Then, the tradition moves ahead with the creation of grain made wagons, with typical decorations that every family and neighbour use and customize it according to their inner traditions and habits. 

Here are a couple of wagons that were exposed during the evening in a nice exposition.

Foglianise is just 3000 inhabitants and it really warmed up my heart seeing how much these people are keen on keeping their traditions as a form of union among all the people from the village and to keep some habits alive. 

In the morning, the parade, in the evening the show of the wagons and some very nice fireworks.

After the fireworks, the mythological creature was awaited. 

The so called “carretto”, literally “small wagon” was awaited from all the young inhabitants. 

This “carretto”, is a small truck, fully loaded with loud music speakers and a DJ. Starting playing full sound music from 11pm to 5am. After a couple of hours I went to bed, as that day I drove 7 hourse with almost 40°C outside, making the trip quite tiring. But the girls that were hosting us, went to bed at 5am and they were quite challenging each other seeking who was the last retiring from the disco-night. 

*Quite funny* 

How a tradition became an occasion for youngsters to enjoy and take part into a huge party. Still, 40 years old people bragging that they went to bad so late, was even more funny. 

So, if in the second half of August you drop by the center of Italy, make sure to make a stop there, as Foglianise inhabitants are very welcoming foreigners to join their party!
