Reconnecting with my roots (Jamaica)

As I meander through my backyard in Jamaica, I'm bombarded with flashbacks of myself as a kid yearning for a simple life.

I'd spend much time outdoors because indoors there was always an unsettling feeling as if there was too much of nothing, which perplexed my mind.

... and throughout my life, solitude, calmness, and nature are some things that have been valued and used as a compass in my life toward my minimalist level of contentment.

It's pretty lush here in Jamaica because we do get a reasonably fair amount of rainfall, so everything is green and thriving... and being back in the tropics, makes me want to experience the elements of nature more.

I do love the smell, the sound, and the feel of rain pelting down on me, and whether I'm sitting on the front porch or in my back garden it's always delightful to experience a heavy downpour.

The outdoors is where freedom, mental clarity, and inner peace are felt, and there's a comforting and grounding feeling of the earth beneath my feet.

The fresh natural air always feels right with my conscious and subconscious self, and I've dreamt of being able to roam this space for what seems like forever, so I cease every moment to enjoy it all.

My family was never big on farming such as rearing animals, (something I would have liked), but from a very early age, stewardship of the land was instilled in me by my mum who took pride in growing fruit and nut-producing trees.

My mum spends endless hours tolling and clearing the land, and she has always prioritized obtaining seeds and fruit trees of high grade, from frequent visits to agricultural shows. Therefore, our backyard has always been **an orchard with seasonal fruit within arms reach,** and being able to feed myself right on my playground has always made me feel charmed.

#### All crops are seasonal
So throughout the years, there are different fruit available and ever-changing.  I missed some of my favourites such as mangoes, but for me, it's just great to be back home.

There used to be a big almond tree where I'd hide out at the top for the solitude of a different level, but it's now gone. Due to the nature of the land and the natural disasters prone to this area, many plants were uprooted and washed away.

Still, I'm lucky to have mangoes, bananas, June plums, passion fruit, starfruit, naseberries, and more, and it has always given me much joy to be able to walk right to my backyard to enjoy delicious fruit.

I'll be harvesting some fruit tomorrow, so I hope to share some more with you.

It's a pleasure for me to journal this part of my life, as I have nothing much of my time spent here in my backyard, where it is 96 degrees in the shade... #RealHot!!!

Nothing better than rain falling down, just the sound reminds me of hot days in South Africa, when the hot air charged up the clouds all day, it just break out at the end of the day with violent pouring, I just love the feeling of the earth getting replenished.

TBH, it's just so good to be back on Jamaican soil. 
I was gone for too long, and my dad eventually sold my car a few years ago. Still driving in Jamaica is not an easy fete. It's macho, aggressive, and senseless, and the death toll on the roads is alarming. The roads in general are bad. Potholes like you'd not believe possible, so I'm not keen to go behind the wheel with my dad's car either.
We hope to do some exploring still, and hopefully meet up with a few good friends that I still have here. It was a long overdue visit, and I didn't want to make any big plans... The last time we did this, an opportunity came up in the Philippines which lasted 7 years. Things are different now, but I'm looking forward to returning to boat life on the canals in the UK:)

Funny enough, when I'm overseas, I always miss my backyard. I'm hoping to start a herb garden and if I lived here permanently, I'd definitely grow my own vegetable. 
The garden used to go down to a lovely river, but my mum has fenced off the area and she says the river is no longer there... it's a shame because I used to chill by that river for hours.

It's great to be back:)))

🎶”96 degrees in the shade. Real hot”. Had to sing out that one. Lol!! Felt some true island vibes looking at and reading your post. 
Home sweet home. I can imagine the feeling. Oh how I miss all those mangoes and just reaching out to pick fruits at arms length.

I had a good time of entertaining content, True, Rains down pouring on us, excite one very much, so! there is mango too in Jamaica, great that I know this.

Our homes has all the memories of our childhood, true, it can feels so much better, to see the backyard of our home and run around it, like we did yesterday.

I will be around tomorrow, to see all the fruits you would harvest, Jamaica is awesome, it nice you are having a good time there.

We went to Jamaica I guess maybe 3 years ago now? Before the Covid nonsense. Was a wonderful trip I think best day in at least 5 years out sailing on catamaran to snorkeling spot on reef, then lunch at Margaritaville, and back to an evening on the beach. Ahhhhhh man, One Love.

That sounds amazing! 
I drove by the Margaritaville on the Hip Strip in Montego Bay on the way from the airport. 
That used to be my hang-out spot in my early 20s 💃

 Before the Covid nonsense, the plan was to travel straight from The Philippines to Jamaica, but all those plans got kicked out the window.
It's great to be back though:)))

It is truly amazing to be able to pick your own stuff.  

You'd absolutely love the variety of mangoes that my mum grows, it's called Julie Manago - they describe it as a rich, sweet, coconut-like flavour, and it's popular because it does not have fibre. I miss the avocado and almond especially, but what she has now is still very nice:)

That sounds really good. Almond would be cool and for me an avocado tree especially would be nice, but it sounds like there is still a lot of variety of other fruits to make up for it.

I also enjoy the sound of the rain and if it is to sleep, so much the better. I also enjoy the smell of damp earth. 

You have a beautiful house surrounded by nature, I love the color of the curtains on the patio and the contrast with the green.

I remember the first time my friends came to my house they were shocked that I lived in a purple house and did not tell them... that was something that I never noticed because I train my eyes to block out things that I don't fancy 🤣

That curtains are all my mum's idea... it makes the place cozy though:)

Yes, it's like a little jungle indeed. I saw a little mongoose yesterday morning. I was doing some Qi gong, and I don't think the mongoose was expecting me at all... He was coming straight to me and clocked me last minute and ran away so fast.
#### I'm a big fan of the mongoose because they were imported to the island to kill off yellow snakes.

It's great being back, and I enjoy having my morning coffee in my garden.

Haha! Yeah, the gardens here look very different. One thing you see a lot of is people maintaining their gardens daily, and it's a normal chore for kids to do before going to school 🤣

My dad is always stressed and worried but now I know why. He listens to the news on every radio and TV station all day long. Yes, the crime here is uncontrollable, but I wish he would use what he has as a little haven and tune the rest out.

My internet is not strong either, and I've experienced several power outages since I've been back, but it's just so much joy for me to see all the butterflies and birds that I don't let anything bother me really:)))

Your backyard looks so beautiful with all the greenery. I'd spend hours there on a sunny day if I ever had the opportunity to find myself in such beautiful orchard. 

I love mangoes too but have never grown a tree was always secretly climbing a neighbor's but one day I stopped after being bitten by big ants. Haha.

There are so many different varieties of mangoes in Jamaica. I could easily gather a dozen different types that look and taste completely different. All sweet and juicy, unlike the mangoes that you get in the supermarkets in places like the UK and Europe.

The funniest thing is that people never appreciate what they have. Nature and everything are taken for granted here.

Oh, the naseberry is a small brown fruit (outside and inside) that looks like a kiwi and has a similar texture, but it's sweet. The other name is sapodilla, and in the Philippines it's called chico or tsiko.

I should pick some later:)

I've re-read the blog to be sure I've read  Jamaica right. Your backyard looks so beautiful, It felt like the backyards we have in a typical Philippine country side. 

Every kid would wish for a backyard that big and with a lot of trees to climb up to. I bet you had an amazing and adventurous childhood in there.

That made me laugh out loud! Indeed! It looks so much like the Philippines that some days when I woke up in the Philippines I was disoriented. Where I lived in Moalboal, there wasn't much grass because people chose stones or tiles to avoid having to maintain grass. Other than that, it looks pretty much the same. The vegetation is identical. Same fruit variety too:)

It's the same for you too with typhoons. We have hurricanes here, and you would have to experience it to believe that humungous tree roots could be uprooted by wind and rain.

There are many butterflies everywhere, and the birds, haha! They sing in a different rhythm. I was laughing my head off the other day, it's like a bird was trying to speak to me.🤣
