# Old certificates

I was reading about @dantheman's new blockchain EOS project that he is helping to launch since he left Steemit, and I thought of another idea for the blockchain that I talked about in yesterday's Steemit Daily Dose. This was for the Steemit blockchain to replace certificate authorties (CA)  to ensure security and privacy for two parties exchanging data over the internet.

## Blockchain replacement

The old certificate authorities (CA) model has been around for web transactions for around 20 years and I still remember it on Windows 2000!

A lot of people believe that authorities like the NSA have already broken these certificates via back door mechanisms, so they are no longer secure.

Edward Snowden has talked in the past about cloud encryption. Here your data is encrypted before going into the cloud, you retain the keys and the cloud provider operates and indexes that data.

I think a blockchain approach over this cloud encryption is the way to go, as no cloud third party is required - the blockchain would supersede these cloud providers.

I believe these old flawed CA protocols can be replaced, but I believe the cloud is not the way forward, blockchain is. 

**In these times of NSA, large corporations are looking to keep their data secret and the implementation of a Steemit blockchain to secure these transactions seem like a fairly neat idea to me.**
