The Tale

It was 2pm and I was already exhausted. I washed my madam's putrid smelling undies and hung them to dry before going on to scrub the kitchen floor. My stomach grumbled in protest, reminding me that I was not allowed to eat until I was done with all my chores.

I scrubbed and scrubbed till my hands were sore and blistered. My back was aching. I decided to rest my eyes a little before continuing my work, my madam always came home by 9pm anyway. I sat on the kitchen floor and drifted off

A hot resounding slap drew me back to reality.
" You lazy girl! You just stay here eating my food and getting fat! So because you were enjoying your sleep, you left me horning at the gate abi?"

My breath caught
"No, ma"
"Shut up, you wretch! ...Now tell me, are you done with your chores?"
I answered, "Not yet ma" and another slap followed
" Useless girl. Do I blame you? Your stupid parents in the grave didn't teach you anything! Get me my cane!"

I quickly jumped to my feet and ran to the part of madam's wardrobe that housed my instruments for punishment. I grabbed the long horsewhip and ran back to the living room where she unleashed the beast in her. She whipped my back till I felt it being torn apart. I screamed in pain and begged but she didn't listen.

Where was death that took my parents away? I wished my parents were still alive. That they hadn't decided to go on a vacation to the Bahamas where their plane crashed during the course of their journey. I would never have to endure this kind of sufffering.

I wouldn't have to eat once a week or sleep on the kitchen floor like an animal. I wouldn't have to work myself to the bone every single day and cry myself to sleep at night

My madam, ignorant of my pleas continued till she finally ran out of breath
"Stupid girl" she hissed loudly as she left

My weeping continued. But when my madam closed the door, my cries slowly came to a stop... before it turned to full blown laughter. I wiped my eyes and arranged my clothes.

If only she knew. If only my madam knew about that I laced her daily coffee with little doses of poison. If only she knew that her husband crawled to my room every night due to the charm I took from Baba. If only she knew about the two little pink lines in the pregnancy test I took last night that indicated that I was pregnant.

A wide smile covered my face. There would be a new madam very soon. It was only a matter of time.
