Have you ever looked up at the night sky and asked yourself the question, "where did it all begin?"

We humans are privileged to live in a time when the begining of all that is (Genesis if you like) can be be seriously explored through direct observations.
Because of the "finite" time it takes for light to travel from the distant reaches of creation, we can now take images of the universe when it was younger... by looking into deep space/time, through evermore powerful telescopes.

Modern cosmology (the science of the origin and development of the universe) provides us with the framework for understanding,  from the earleist history of the cosmos through to the present day. 

Using "space based" and large "ground based" telescopes we now have observations of data, that provide detailed maps of a time when the age of our universe was only 400,000 years old! A singular image of the vey first galaxies when the universe was about 1 billion years old was accidentally taken by the Spitzer Space Telescope.

Unfortunately we have almost no data, and just 1 image in between the 400,000 to 1 billion time period.  The time of the Big Bang "cooling down"and the first galaxies forming around a billion years later.

This is comparable to having a photo album of a stranger. The very first photo is of an ultrasound and then no more photos...  the next photo in the album is that of a person as an adult.

We need more information about the "infant" primordial cosmos & the universe as a "teenager!"  Alas... if only we had a telescope better than the Spitzer Space Telescope to gather new and vital information.

The JWST's primary scientific mission has four main goals:
*to search for light from the first stars and galaxies that formed in the Universe after the Big Bang.
*to study the formation and evolution of galaxies.
*to understand the formation of stars and planetary systems.
*to study planetary systems and the origins of life.
