This quote by *Ellen Goodman* got me really thinking very hard and left me with so many questions. ###

Are we slaves...financially? or we just part of an ongoing system/cycle?

As we grow up our parents teach us about the importance of going to school and education from the day you are born. * We spend 12 years of our time going through fundamentals training which is up to the time you get to tertiary. * Tertiary takes another 4-5 years even more to complete. * Finally if you lucky and you get a job. * Then you get into debts...buy a car and house. * Maybe have a family then have kids...the cycle starts again they have to go to school and you preach the importance of going to school. ###

At the end of the month...you have debit orders...debts to settle

### Well don't get me wrong: * **Education** is important; * Having a **car** and **house** is very convenient; * Well maybe some will agree with me that having **kids and family** its a good thing (ask my pockets they know very well). I wake up very early in the morning to go to work thus travel about 80 km from Pretoria to Johannesburg in an unpredictable traffic congestion which takes me about 1 -2 hours then later back again. When I get home I am useless and tired, I just want to eat and sleep. When I am not tired I prepare my blogs for Steemit. Well you can say there is no enough time to invest in yourself in this regard. Comes month end, salary lasts only for a few a days. ###

One may ask but how do we break the cycle?

Well personally I don't know...In my case Steemit has been helpful to cover some of the petrol costs which made life a little better. I have seen people posting to have left their jobs to focus only on Steemit....well looking at the price right now I don't think its a wise I idea but I have faith in Steem it will bounce back but that doesn't mean quieting my job, maybe for now. ###

The main question remains are we slaves to the system/cycle?

If not, share how do you do it? Advice and guidance? And please don't say...**don't have kids.**

Yes, we are slaves to the system, which has given the rise to many new systems which have failed miserably. Life is a jungle, and we have to pay for our creature comforts whether we like it or not. Perhaps one day we will reach an era of enlightenment; free food, free housing etc.. but what would we be as people? Even worse slaves?

It seems to me that if you're settling for an hourly wage, you risk getting into this cycle / rut that you describe. Starting a business offers greater potential but it's done with greater risk, which is always the tradeoff in economics and in life. The key, I think, is to find a vocation you're passionate about. That's your best chance of avoiding slave status.

@jimitations yes you right...I always believed in investing in yourself. If you work a 9 to 5 job, spend atleast an hour after work and do something that will give you extra income. Everyday after work I prefer to stay behind and find something to write on Steemit, thus an extra incoming. Thanks for the comment.

First, having kids is the whole point right? My thought is yes. otherwise what are we doing here? Are we slaves to a system or cycle? Interesting question and a complex question, there are many levels of existence and in at least one of those levels the answer is yes you are essentially a slave. I'm going to explain a bit, but not to much because this is only a comment, not an article, but maybe i'll write more in-depth on the subject in that format. Simplified Levels: There exists the physical world and the abstract world. The physical world exists for all. Here we must follow the laws of survival, eat, drink, sleep, reproduce. The abstract world is created by you. Yet also created by the contracts you agree to; currency, government, friendships, luxuries, could go on and on. Long story short, we are slaves to or better yet required to conform to the physical world. The abstract world though, where most perceive the enslavement if we are slaves we have agreed to it. Which in a way is to say we are not slaves. Great article and you are definitely not alone in your perception of your experiences.

I think you are right, we come into a rut, which is difficult to get out off. I would also like to leave my job, but I must pay the bills. If one however scale down a lot, I suppose you can do it, it is all a matter of choices. If I only had to provide for myself, I could resign now!!
