What is Steemit? Frequently Asked Questions Explained [MMG Tutorials Pt 2]
https://youtu.be/5AatOhZG8y4
What is Steemit? Why should I make an account? Does it Cost Money? Do I need followers? Yes, and no, Steemit is a free social media platform! Here's the MMG review of Steemit.com. This is a video in part of our MMG Steemit Tutorials, meant to help usher in MMG gaming community members to steemit. This video and blog post will help anyone interested in learning about steemit.

If you're just making an account and you're just finished the first tutorial, you're probably waiting for your account to be made. This article and video will help you understand Steemit a bit better. We will be using the @ukuleletutorials , Smurf's personal account, to explain things.

Steemit - Social Media meets Cryptocurrnecy

In a nutshell, Steemit.com is everything people dreamed Facebook was, when they say things like "More ads? Wow, Facebook makes enough money". Ever wonder how Facebook is making on that money? Or, better yet, how they're using it?

https://steemitimages.com/DQmWN26ER3KAZttSUZD96BJfC7vdampXQ92rCV8UKvHWHT9/block-2.png

Well, the truth of the matter is that Facebook is selling that user data to advertisers who then advertise to you on Facebook and in other places via pixels and other tools. I don't want to get to technical, so let's just say this, it's all about DATA. Now, if a social media website like Facebook can make money off of things like you liking your friends posts, you sharing images and videos, and when you engage or comment on someone's post (which they do, remember it's about reading data, data is worth money) then why can't another website do it? Well, the answer is they can, and they do, and this what websites have been doing for decades now.

What Steemit offers is a decentralized solution to the money being made off of that data. "I wish Facebook paid me" is a reality now, except it's not Facebook that's paying you, it's Steemit, and every like, comment, and share is potentially worth a lot of money which you get to claim for yourself. How's that for an introduction.

How Do You Make Money On Steemit?

There are multiple things that will earn you money on Steemit, and before I dive into them (just covering the basics in this post) I'd like to say this, you want to not only post and share good content, you also want to be smart about how you do. Always try to be smart. Okay, oversimplification rant finished.

So, how do you make money? Well there are 3 main options.

How To Make $$$

Make a Post

Upvote(Like) a Post

ReSteem(Share) a Post

It's that simple, really. When you make a post the "Rewards" from this post can be found in your wallet under "Author Rewards". This is kind of nostalgic for me because I know schools teach students that when you make a social media post, you're the author of that post, but what children don't often see, is how that will scale in the future. Crazy stuff.

Anywho, when you like or share a post, you get what's called "Curation Rewards". The name pretty much sums it up, but to simplify, when you collect content on your facebook or instagram feed, and share it with people, you're actually curating content, and that's valuable data. You're doing work for Facebook by telling them, hey, people like this, it's worth pushing. So, they do, and they make money from that. Now, you get to make money from doing that same thing with content on Steemit.

How Curation Works

When you curate content, you are given a small portion of the rewards gained on that post. Users that curate a post get up 25% of the curation rewards available. If the post makes more, you make more, but remember, you're sharing it with the other curators, so this doesn't usually amount to a lot of money on a post with $500 and 1000 upvotes(likes), but if the post had $500 and 2 likes, good god, go curate that!

There's also a time span that helps you maximize your curation rewards, don't quote me on this, but I believe it's at least 20 mins after a post has been made will get you in to the most curation rewards.

But wait, there's more!

Commenting for cash - Good Strategy

This one is the kicker. You can seriously make a lot of money by commenting on posts. All of those votes from people who don't have any comments on their post but have a post with $5 on it, that's a pretty penny. All those little post worth $0.30 with 2 votes...well, it's a nice bet that the person who wrote that is worth a good vote, hope on over there and throw your 2 cents so that you can make some money. Doing this will also help you to assimilate into the Steemit community and will result in you eventually gaining more followers.

Commenting is also great, because it doesn't use up any of your Steem Power, and outside of the limit of about 20 seconds per comment, you can comment as much as you want! That means endless potential for someone who spends a nice amount of their time on Steemit commenting as well as creating content.

I will say this, not everyone is going to give you a like for commenting. This may be because of how they manage their SP, others may only upvote(like) your post if you

Can't I just Like a Million Posts and Be Rich?

No, there is a thing called Steem Power which stops you from being able to just upvote post constantly and give out "the same amount of money". Did you catch how I worded that? The same amount? Well, that's because for each upvote(like) that you make, you drain a little bit of your Steem Power for the day.

Yo, What is Steem Power? Explain (SP)

So, think of SP (Steem Power) like this. Everyone starts the day with a full cup of Steem Power (SP). Your Steem Power represents how much your vote is worth (it's also your stake in the social media platform it's self, so if you want to get technical, each SP is a share of the company). As the day goes on people begin to like posts, which uses up a small bit of their SP per post. So, if you start the day worth $1.00 and you like 10 post when you first wake up, you'll notice the first post gets $1.00 then a little less, then a little less, and on down. Now, the goal is to not let your SP go all the way down by the end of the day. You want to space out your voting and try and keep SP high...if you care. SP replenishes at a rate of 0.01% per minute.
