Llegado el momento en el que las esporas han madurado y están preparadas para su dispersión, en los cuerpos fructíferos de estos hongos se abre un agujerito o poro central. La lluvia o el paso de algún animal ejercerá la fuerza suficiente para que las minúsculas esporas se difundan por el aire, dando la apariencia de un pedo visible.

El nombre científico de esta seta es *Lycoperdom perlatum* cuyo apellido hace alusión a las perlas o pequeñas espinas piramidales que recubren su parte externa. No es buen comestible ya que al poco que madure, desprende mal olor.
