 # <center>What Defines Art? </center>

Do you ever come into an art gallery that is completely empty except for one normal looking stone on the floor and feel slightly upset? Is that art?

### Do you personally have to like it to make a given piece "Art?"

## Technicality
-------
Often art is thought of as extremely mysterious and technical. It isn't always the case that a piece of art with 10,000 brush strokes is better than a piece that is one continuous brush stroke. The content goes deeper than this into the emotion and what the art is trying to show. Many artists throughout time have had incredible technique, even certain eras of art were thought of as technique based. Technical ability can help increase how clear of a story is told, or how much detail can be shown. Without a doubt technique plays a role in how we perceive value in artwork, but I don't believe it defines what we think is art.

5a: archaic: a skillful plan
5b: the quality or state of being artful (see artful 2a)
6: decorative or illustrative elements in printed matter 

## Temporary Conclusion

Art is essentially anything created with the intention of having an aesthetic appeal, tell a story, and/or evoke an emotional reaction. Some would say a strong upset reaction to an art piece or idea actually helps validate the piece's place in the art world. 

## Ask Yourself
-------
Does this piece of art tell a story? Do you feel something when you look at this piece of art? Does it look particularly good or bad to you?

Each individual is capable of defining art in their own way. If you can answer yes to any of the above questions, you may be leaning into defining what art means for yourself.

>What all of the above examples are meant to demonstrate is that "art" doesn't have to be traditional to be art. Nor does it have to be pretty or classy. It does, in general, need to have some thought behind it. How well an artist can defend their thought process is just as important at the artistic process.
