Diesen Song werde ich immer mit einem bestimmten Moment verbinden. Es war im Oktober 1992 (nur wenige Tage vor dem Tod Willy Brandt, wenn das auch nichts mit der Musik oder meiner Geschichte zu tun hat) und ich war in Ägypten. Genauer gesagt an der Ostküste des Sinai. Damals war das alles noch nicht so touristisch wie heute, selbst Sharm-el-Sheikh war noch relativ überschaubar. Wir waren aber weiter nördlich,  ungefähr auf der Hälfte der Strecke der Küste, in Nuweiba.

It was in October 1992 (only a few days before Willy Brandt died, although this has nothing to do with the music or this story) and I was in Egypt. More precisely, on the east coast of the Sinai. At that time the tourism was in its infancy compared to today, even Sharm-el-Sheikh was still relatively small. But we were further north, about halfway along the coast, in Nuweiba.

Dort gab es damals nur wenige kleine Hotels  und dann diese, na ja -  nennen wir es Hüttensiedlung. Wie ein billiges Tropenklischee, Hütten aus Strohgeflecht mit ebensolchen Dächern. Man konnte dort aber auch zelten, und das haben wir getan. Denn wir waren mit Rucksack und Zelt unterwegs - das konnte man damals noch problemlos in Ägypten. Wir hatten nur das leichte Innenzelt aufgebaut unter den Sonnenschutz-Konstruktionen am Strand.

>At that time there were only a few small hotels there and then this, well - let's call it a cabin complex. Like a cheap tropical cliché, huts made of straw mats with roofs of the same kind. But you could also camp there, and we did that. Because we were backpacking with a tent - you could do that without any problems in Egypt at that time. We only had the light inner tent set up under the shading constructions on the beach.

Jedenfalls verbrachten wir dort einige Tage, schnorchelten entlang der Küste und futterten leckersten ägyptisches Fastfood namens [Koshari](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuschari). Der Golf von Aqaba ist dort nicht sehr breit und man kann die Berge von Saudi-Arabien am anderen Ufer sehen.

Es war ruhig dort mit nur wenig Tourismus, zum Großteil Taucher. Doch eines Morgens wurde ich von Tönen geweckt, die mir sehr bekannt vorkamen, die aber nicht zu diesem Ort passten. Es war früh, ich schlief noch und dann hörte ich dieses Lied. Und nicht leise - denn niemand der diese Musik hört, wird sie leise hören. Nein, sie schallte über den ganzen Strand. Ich kann mir nicht vorstellen wie Leute reagiert haben darauf, die dieses Lied nicht kannten oder nicht mochten. Jedenfalls wachte ich auf, war mir nicht vollkommen sicher, ob die Musik nun real war oder nicht  und zog den Reißverschluss des Zeltes ein Stück auf. Da war ich nun, schaute noch nicht ganz wach auf die Saudi-arabischen Berge im frühen Morgenlicht und dazu diese Musik!

>It was quiet there with little tourism, mostly divers. But one morning I was awakened by sounds that seemed very familiar to me but did not fit to this place. It was early, I was still sleeping and then I heard this song. And not quietly - because nobody who hears this music will hear it quietly. No, it sounded all over the beach. I can't imagine how people reacted to it who didn't know or didn't like this song. Anyway, I woke up, not completely sure if the music was real or not, and unzipped the tent a little bit. There I was, not quite awake yet, looking up at the Saudi Arabian mountains in the early morning light accompanied by this music!

Aber ich mochte dieses Lied sehr und liebe es noch heute. Es hat eine unvergleichliche Dynamik, begleitet von einer gewissen Aggressivität, vor allem wenn man auch noch auf den Text hört. Ich war (und bin es noch) ein Fan von Electronic Body Music, besonders der belgischen "Begründer" wie Nitzer Ebb oder eben Front 242. (Eines Tages mache ich auch mal einen Post über die Bands, auf denen diese Musik fußte wie Throbbing Gristle oder Die Krupps).

>But I liked this song very much and still love it today. It has an incomparable dynamic, accompanied by a certain aggressiveness, especially when you listen to the lyrics. I was (and still am) a fan of Electronic Body Music, especially the Belgian "founders" of it like Nitzer Ebb and Front 242. (One day I'll make a post about all the bands that led to EBM, from Throbbing Gristle to Die Krupp's).

Ich war zu jener Zeit bei mindestens zwei Konzerten von Front 242 in einem ziemlich kleinen Club (PC69 in Bielefeld), und es war fantastisch. Laut, aber Lautstärke in guter Qualität, und dunkel und überwältigend. Es ist großartige Musik, immer noch so lebendig wie vor 30 Jahren. Sie treibt das Blut in Wallung, verführt zum Tanzen - ich bin sicher, dass ich diese Musik auch in Jahrzehnten noch lieben werde!


>I've been to two at least two concerts of Front 242 around that time, in a rather small venue (PC69 in Bielefeld) and they were fabulous. Loud, overwhelmingly loud and dark and charismatic. It's great music, still as vibrant as thirty years ago. It's stirs up your blood, entices you to dance - I'm sure I will still love that music decades from now!

Und noch ein schöner Song der Band - mit recht viel deutschem Text. Aber der passt, finde ich: sowohl inhaltlich als auch vom Klang.

Another great song of this band - the title and most of the text is "Im Rhythmus bleiben" = stay in the rhythm. And I have to admit, the German words work perfectly even if you don't know what they mean. The other German words are "Alles was drin ist", which I'd translate as "Give everything!" in this context.
