Después de un gran juego que demostró la Ecuador del "Profe" Alfaro contra la selección de Qatar en el juego inaugural, estaba la expectativa sobre que ocurriría al momento de enfrentar a un duro rival como es Países Bajos de Van Gaal y un gran número de estrellas del fútbol en el mundo y aunque para algunos pudiera considerar esa expectativa como temor, creo que más que nada era las ganas de ver a un equipo que juega bien y que estaba preparado para enfrentar a este tipo de encuentros, ya que el seleccionado ecuatoriano es una de las mejores en nuestro continente. Para este juego, Gustavo Alfaro realizó cambios en el esquema del equipo; en la primera jornada del grupo, El Profe hizo jugar a su equipo con el esquema 4-4-1-1, ahora para este juego contra un rival con mucha más categoría, cambio la posición de sus jugadores; en un principio se mostraba un esquema ultra defensivo con un esquema de 5-3-2, pero la realidad fue otra, ya que el equipo jugó con una línea de tres defensores, cuatro jugadores en el medio campo en dónde Estupiñán por derecha y Preciado por izquierda cumplieron la función de carrileros; delante de ellos estaba un tridente de ataque con Plata y Valencia, los cuales no cumplieron funciones de interiores derecho e izquierdo, pero también aparecían en el frente del ataque y a ellos le sumo Estrada que fue el único delantero centro.

El plan de Alfaro y su cuerpo técnico sufrió un traspié con el gol de la emergente estrella neerlandesa, Cody Gakpo, sorprendió a todos con un zurdazo fuera del área anotando un buen gol que sí, trajo mucha precaución para el seleccionado ecuatoriano cómo para sus aficionados; en ese momento se tuvo la sensación de que posiblemente lo que había hecho Ecuador contra Qatar fue un espejismo y que está era la realidad de la selección sudamericana, pero la realidad fue que después de un vacío en el control del encuentro, "La Tricolor" comenzó a adelantar líneas y crear ocasiones, haciendo trabajar al portero Noppert que ya tuvo una gran actuación contra el combinado de Senegal en la jornada pasada. La presión que empezó a crear tanto Mendez cómo Caicedo y Preciado a Frenkie de Jong, hizo que el equipo de Países Bajos perdiera el control del juego y que todo se resolviera con pases largos de los defensas a sus delanteros y es que los que deben acompañar al jugador del FC Barcelona a crear juego por parte del seleccionado naranja, no han demostrado un nivel óptimo para esta competición; esa presión y el despertar de un nuevo carácter y actitud ecuatoriana fue lo que poco a poco comenzó a inclinar la balanza a favor de la selección sudamericana aunque el premio del empate no terminaba en concertarse.

No había ninguna razón para cambiar lo que Ecuador estaba realizando en el juego; la presión y el control en el medio campo sacó por completo a jugador más importante que tiene Países Bajos; sin la influencia de Frenkie de Jong, la selección europea no tenía ninguna participación en el partido y eso fue empujando de una manera precavida a Ecuador para buscar el ansiado y merecido empate, el cual pudo conseguir al tapar toda posible salida del balón por parte del portero neerlandés que propicia un error que de manera rápida aprovecha La Tri y pudo conseguir el gol del empate anotado por Enner Valencia que se convierte por los momentos en el goleador del Mundial. La actitud de Ecuador después del gol fue buena y hasta tuvieron muchas ocasiones para conseguir el gol que completara una importante remontada, pero lamentablemente la lesión del capitán y goleador pudo traer alguna preocupación a sus compañeros y afectó el ritmo de juego. Al final tuve una sensación de que ambas selecciones daban por buen resultado el empate, aunque Ecuador deberá no perder contra Senegal para poder estar en la segunda fase y es que quién obtenga un buen resultado de ese último encuentro por el grupo A, será segundo clasificado, ya que Países Bajos enfrentará a  Qatar que está ya eliminando del torneo; solo quedará ver cómo enfrenta Alfaro y sus seleccionados ese importante último encuentro y por el bien del fútbol sudamericano esperemos que sea La Tri quien califique a octavos de final.
