November 30, 2020: Monday after Thanksgiving, Trim Carpentry Galore
After a long weekend of relaxation and recreation, today I finished the baseboards and trim on the kitchen. Other than touching up the paint on the ceiling, the kitchen is done. I still lack the hallway, dining room, master bath, and one persnickety board in the master bedroom.

At first, it was hard going to have fun with folks this weekend. After months of hard charging and getting work done, I had to downshift, and when I did, I downshifted hard. Thursday was spent almost all day on sleeping, except for when I was eating of course. I took three naps; one hour, six hours, and four hours, along with sleeping well that night. I guess I was tired.

Friday we played games and did puzzles until we went home to do a little more work. The living room is all cleaned out now, and we're almost completely moved back into our respective rooms.

Saturday was spent with my men's group doing what we now call friendsgiving. Our farmer in the group just got a new property and needed a bit of help, so we went to clear some of his woods. My axe felled about a dozen trees, the biggest of which was a foot-wide cedar. We took turns on all of it, all learning and testing each other's equipment, but I tried to keep swinging pretty constant. It felt good, and I think I'm going to look into felling trees as a side gig. Later that evening we had a big potluck and talked on the porch while it rained. What a good day!
Sunday my parents came over and we talked, ate, and made targets for axe throwing. I guess my mom has gotten interested in axe throwing, so I made her and I each a big target out of some scrap lumber.

*My first bit of at-home recreation in months*

The target bit is made of twenty five six-inch lengths of 4x4 fence posts from my parents old fence. The frame is some leftover 2x4, and the back is a bit of leftover subfloor scraps. Each 4x4 block is screwed in individually for easy servicing, should they ever need changed out. The screws are in there deep, so the target can be trimmed with a chainsaw up to 3" off the face and still be safe to throw at without messing up the bit of your axe. It's about a foot and a half square and weighs somewhere around thirty pounds. It took maybe an hour to make both of the targets, and I gave the prettier second one to my mom. This'll add a new bit of backyard fun for when we have friends over. I'm going to be looking into material costs, because I'd like to start making these as a side gig. If I could sell a pair for a hundred bucks over material cost, that's a pretty solid side gig. It might be a good time to get into these, as axe throwing seems to be a trendy thing to get into lately.

Today at work the whole plant lost power to every significant production system. Production stopped in our department for the first half of the shift, so we'll be working overtime to make up the production. I'm signing up because we could use the money. One of the men from the community group is adding gutters to our house at cost, and we're just shy of being able to afford it. Also, the overtime will help with replacing our spent emergency savings and my rifle optic that I sold in the early stages of the house project. I'll be able to upgrade that system for close to the same price that I sold my last optic for. More on that later.

After getting to work with my new axe for a few hours on Saturday, I asked Melissa if I could hang it on my little wall by our bed. She said that since I worked so hard on the house she'd give me permission to do just that 🤣 I like the axe more than I thought I would, and this storage solution actually solves the problem of where to store it without scratching up the new pretty floor. My math when I bought the axe was a little bit off. It's still a medium axe by weight, but it's closer to three pounds than two and a half like I thought. The long handle means that axe is really flying when it makes contact, and the thin profile means it penetrates a tree like crazy. As I get better at using it, it'll be a really effective tool. Very satisfied with my purchase from [Baryonyx Knife Company](https://www.baryonyxknife.com).

I don't have many progress pics from the house to share right now, but we've got very little left to do. I'm proud of the house we've built. Coming Saturday, we're starting the raw milk co-op back up and having friends over to hang out for the first time in a long time. It feels good coming out the end of this project. Some folks would see it as a huge negative and a reason to sell their house after fixing it up as cheap as they could. I don't work like that. This was an opportunity, just like everything, to learn and enhance my quality of life, and here we are, expecting to save over a grand a year on our water and electric bills, having a quality show-grade house with extremely comfortable living conditions. I really feel like I'm winning at life right now.

Now I can work on setting my sights on future projects. :)

Hope all is well for you and yours.

Love from Texas

Nate 💚
