Voting for 21 witnesses is hard for most newcomers who don't know many witnesses. A good option is the 'proxy' option which will basically 'copy' the votes of another user, that you trust. Low maintenance, and better for the community than voting for less than 21 witnesses or doing it and forgetting about it.

Likeyou, I also maintain my list of voted witnesses regularly. I basically vote for people who commit their time and personal skills into making steem better. Witnesses who run bidbots or just sit idle will never get my vote.

When voting for a Witness, there are a few things  I personally look out for, as I'm a <a href="https://steemit.com/steem/@therealwolf/therealwolf-2-0-steem-anniversary-incl-200-steem-contest">Witness</a> myself and the **most important category** is:

<h1>Witness Infrastructure</h1>

The most important job for every Witness is to make sure that the servers are secure, in decentralised places and up-to-date with the newest stable steemd version.

<h2>Witness Servers</h2>

Depending on how high a witness is ranked, the amount of servers changes - a top 20 Witness should have at least 2 dedicated witness servers, maybe even a 3rd backup one.

*Why?* Well, imagine there is a technical issue with the server and it's falling out. If a witness has no backup, it will take at least a few hours to a day until the problem is solved or that a new server is ordered and after that at least a few more hours or even days until the witness server is ready and updated.

Now, if a witness is running all of these servers with the same provider and same data-centre: =>**BAD**.

If the servers are in different data-centres but same provider: **NOT GOOD**.

But if the servers are in different data-centres AND from different providers: **GOOD**

And if the servers are even hosted by the witness himself, meaning only he has physical access to them: **PERFECT** (@jesta recently <a href="https://steemit.com/witness-category/@jesta/jesta-witness-update-2018-q3">did exactly that</a>)

<h2>Seed Node</h2>

In addition, a seed node is important as well, as those are required for the witness to get their data from. Here is a list: https://status.steemnodes.com/ (mine is at `seed.smartsteem.com:2001`, but it's too new that's why it's not listed there yet)

<h2>RPC Nodes</h2>

Now, RPC nodes are also important, but very costly and most of them, are somewhat slow and unreliable. The fastest rpc-node from a witness is managed by @themarkymark, who is investing quite a lot of time into that.

Which is one of the reasons I don't have a RPC node - before I add another mediocre server to the list, I'd rather do it later when I have more experience. (and more time - I'm currently fully booked with the projects I'm doing)

<h2>Updates</h2>

When you look at http://steeme.com/witness or https://steemd.com/witnesses you'll see a version number for every witness. This is the steemd version the server of the witness is running. 

Often times, a new update is being released by Steemit Inc (or maybe in the future somebody else as well) and it's crucial for witnesses to react as fast as possible. 

Especially when the update is fixing an exploit.

I personally have updated my nodes in the last months between a few hours and a day after the update release. If you find that a witness is running an old version, without any good reason, then that's not a good sign the witness is dedicated towards Steem.

<h2>Missed Blocks</h2>

Now, the job of a witness is to sign blocks. If this doesn't happen, either the server is down or other reasons, the block will be missed.

This happens and it's not a big deal - if it's a one-time thing. I personally missed about 10 so far, which is roughly 0.18% of all my signed blocks.

But if somebody is missing blocks every single day, then something is not right.

<h2>Pricefeed</h2>

Another job of a witness is to publish a pricefeed every 1-4 hours. I personally do it every 1 hour, but some prefer to do it up to 4 hours each.

This is important as the price you see for example on https://steemnow.com/upvotecalc.html is the price we, the witnesses, are publishing. This price is affecting the payouts of posts, your vote-value etc.

<h2>Experienced with Steem</h2>

Last but not least, a Witness has to be experienced with Steem. Best example is somebody like @gtg.

If shit goes down and nothing works anymore, you can be sure that gtg knows what to do.

So every Witness needs a somewhat good level of knowledge about Steem. (some more than others)

(If that's not the case, a Witness can of course consist of a team, but at least one of the members, **has** to be experienced.)

And to give a personal thought about that: I'm def. not as good as gtg, hands down, but I've developed enough for and on Steem that I know most of the stuff.

<h2>The Rest</h2>

Now, I hope I haven't forgotten anything, but what I've written above are the most important tasks/attributes of a good witness. If somebody is lacking in more than 1 field there, then that's not a good sign.

And all the rest:

- How active the witness is on Steem
- What projects the witness is doing
- What political thoughts he has regarding Steem (Promotion-services good or bad etc.)

All of that is priority wise behind the infrastructure and basic Witness tasks & knowledge.
