Last week I read @voronoi ’s post about Snapchat's Augmented Reality App as used with viewing art in spaces where it doesn't exist physically https://steemit.com/news/@voronoi/snapchat-public-art-augmented-reality and it has me thinking and turning over this concept of augmented reality. I wanted to not only share some of my musings but more importantly to invite and hear more of yours. Ideally I’d love to sit and throw around ideas in a group conversation with you, but here is the next best thing.

First reaction is excitement, wow, this is totally cool and my mind starts seeing the many possibilities that this opens -  how powerful to place different sculptures or murals or laser art in different places to see the effect on the space as well as the effect on the piece of art being in various locations, and how great to be able to “experience” several pieces of art in a places where one wouldn’t see any.

Then I began thinking about my own experiences with sculpture and how the power of it lies in not only the way a sculpture looks, but also the ways it occupies a space, the mass of it, in other words the way it ***feels***. It takes all of my senses to experience it (except taste).  Although this app has potential, how much value does it offer if it only engages the visual sense? Would it feel claustrophobic having to look through my phone to have this experience? Could it be more of a complete sensory experience with goggles rather than a phone?

I also thought of how great works of art in sculpture parks always inspire conversations and my friend(s) and I usually find ourselves sitting for awhile in the presence of a piece. Can this happen with the art as used in this app?

hmmmm….very interesting! Of course I thought about submitting my work, and then I wonder how this will work in terms of whether artists will be given any kind of compensation for the use of their pieces. I would guess Jeff Koons was paid for his participation because he lent his prestige to snapchat’s launch, but what about others? What if the artists were given a royalty each time someone chooses to view their art in the app? That would be very cool if so.

I always want to know about how the creative person behind a given work is being compensated or otherwise valued in a way that supports her/his potential to continue to make this work that brings others so much profit. 

Another question is who will determine which art works are included in the app? Would Snapchat only include already established names or would they include anyone who submits or will they have a curated selection? I’d like to see Snapchat include everyone who submits and for artists to receive royalties each time someone views their art. I’d also like to see the art to be organized so it can be searched by name, medium, subject, size and more. 

**I also hope down the line when AR has flowered more fully as an everyday part of life that it can be one option and not replace parts of life that are more precious in physical form. All the more reason for us to think carefully about how to best use and implement technology and how we value engagement with it personally and societally. We vote with our resources of attention and money, and if we withdraw our interest from inferior technology, innovators will be forced to improve on it. I’d like to see **wholistic improvements** to our lives, our world rather than partial improvements that also reduce our quality of life. As creative thinkers we have a lot of power to create our future.**
