INTRODUCTION

Source

Monster Hunter is a game developed and published by Capcom. The company well known for games like Street Fighter, Resident Evil and Devil May Cry. Monster Hunter was first introduced way back in 2004 as a PlayStation 2 title. Monster Hunter: Generations or "X" as it is known in Japan - made it's initial debut in 2015 in Japan as Monster Hunter X and in 2016 to the rest of the world as we know it, Monster Hunter: Generations. How well does the game hold up and how much as it improved since the series first launched all those years ago? Let's find out.

STORY: 5/10

Not much to talk about here. The Monster Hunter series always ran on a formula of you being a new Hunter and wanting to make a name for yourself. While the Numbered series such as Monster Hunter 4 did try to put in some form of narrative, it is mostly negligible. Generations completely takes away the narrative part and primarily focuses on gameplay. Which brings us to our next bit.

GAMEPLAY: 9/10

When thinking about a specific genre for the game, it is difficult to put it into one. It plays a bit like a MMORPG and an action adventure title. You play the role of a new Hunter and as the title would suggest, you go on hunts. You hunt Monsters who's designs are influenced by real life creatures and lore. Monsters are classified into small and large monsters and it's hunting those large monsters where the fun factor really comes into play. You start off the game in a village, there are a total of 4 villages and one guild and all these areas act as the game world's main hubs, where you take on various hunting contracts, visit merchants for items and buy/craft new gear such as Armor and Weapons. The game quests are primarily divided into 4 job requests which are;

1) Hunting

2) Slaying

3) Gathering

4) Capture

Hunting sees you receiving requests to hunt certain monsters. They can range from big Monsters to small ones. How hunting differs from Slaying is that Hunting provides you with the option of capturing the big Monsters. As capturing them nets you the possibility of gaining more loot from the Monster than you would have if you killed it instead.

Slaying are quests where you are tasked with killing the Monster.

Gathering quests require you to gather the requested materials from the game world.

Capture demands that you capture the monsters concerned with the quest and not kill it. Killing the Monster will lead to you failing the quest.

In my time with the game, capture quests were very few. If I remember correctly, we only incountered one or two capture quests in the single player quest lines.

As mentioned before you hunt Monsters and the reason you hunt them is to acquire loot by killing and craving them up. And you use these loot items to craft even more powerful and better gear. This is where the game manages to captivate you. Many if not all monsters are extremely large and taking them down and crafting armor using their resources gives you a certain level of satisfaction. Similar to the satisfaction you receive when taking down a boss in the Dark Souls series. Fair warning though, some of the high level gears and Weapons require you to fight the Monsters multiple times so that you acquire all the needed parts to craft your desired gear.

The hunts are limited as to how long you can take to complete it. With 50 mins per hunt being the standard. Failing to completing the objective in the allotted time leads to you failing the quest. This is where the preparation element comes into play. You receive a small but extremely useful description of each and every monster. Such as it's strengths and weaknesses. For instance a monster might inflict elemental damage such as fire. Knowing this you could craft a gear with high fire resistance and a weapon with water elemental damage. Not only that but you could carry items with you that could give you an edge in battle, such as traps, potion packs, attack boosters etc. Each hub provides a dining section where you could spend a little bit of money and eat some pre-set meals(a limited selection of your prefered food combo is available too) which could give stat buffs and increase your health and stamina pool.

You even receive a form of assistance with the presence of "Palicos". Palicos are adorable little cat creatures that accompany you during your hunting/gathering adventures. You can breed Palicos based on your preferences in both appearance and attributes.

Carefully calculating the needed items, gears and Weapons. We managed to take down even the most difficult of monsters in less than 15 mins.

When talking about combat weapons the game provides a wide variety of weapons ranging from long swords to bows. Each weapon feels and controls in its own manner and you will need to test each out to find what best suits you.

New to Generations is the ability to asign styles and Hunter arts. Those are techiniques which you use to fight monsters. The styles include Guild, Striker, Ariel and Adapt. Each weapon also has a certain Hunter Art which you assign from your in-game house. These are weapon specific special moves which you can pull-off once you charge up a meter. Think of it as a combo meter similar to Steer Fighter or Mortal Kombat series.

The game also provides up to 4 people local/Online Co-op. Where you and a 3 friends can take on the monsters together. During my time trying out the online aspect I found that finding a lobby was some what difficult as not many people still play the game online or that the ones available were high level hunts. Once I finally managed to find an online match and it worked extremely well with little to no lag.

We would also like to point out that the controls need a bit getting use to as the camera is controlled using the 3DS' lower touch screen or you will need to buy a Circle Pad Pro accessory. But if you own a New 3DS or New 3DS XL, you will not face these issue due to the inclusion of the C stick.

VISUALS: 7/10

As the game is a Nintendo 3DS title and the 3DS Isn't much of a graphical power house, so the game isn't the most pretty looking title out there. At best it can be compared to visuals of a PS2. That isn't to say that the game doesn't look good. The monsters present some pretty decent designs and some level of detail is present. But for a handheld game and considering how much it offers, it is more than reasonable. Images also tend to look a bit washed at times due to the lack of a high definition display on the 3DS. Also, it should be noticed that the game looks slightly better on the new 3DS devices with tiny improvements to draw distances. Other than that, it remains largely similar to the old 3DS models.

PERFORMANCE: 10/10

The game performs extremely well. Even with all the action and cluster happening on screen, the game manages to keep at a almost solid 30 FPS, with a frame or 2 dips occasionally occurring. FPS results are similar on the Old and New 3DS devices. Loading screens are also extremely short. Multiplayer gameplay also managed to run extremely smoothly. This game in short just works as a game is supposed to on launch.

AUDIO: 7/10

One of the soundtracks

The game entirely focuses on Orchestral music. The game lacks any sort of voice acting so music plays a key role and to that front? Sadly it is a bit limited. Don't misunderstand me here, what is there is exception. Each world area is introduced for the first time with music que's that espress the scale of the open world and each village hub area has it's own type of theme which is as relaxing as it can get. When fighting monsters, the music played is intense and engaging. But sadly while just exploring the world there is a lack of background music which is a bit dissapointing. I also noticed that most of the Main Monsters share the same music.

TOTAL SCORE: 38/50

STORY 5/10

GAMEPLAY 9/10

VISUALS 7/10

PERFORMANCE 10/10

AUDIO 7/10

76% RATE OF APPROVAL

CONCLUSION:

Monster Hunter is a series which always struggled to find it's place outside of Japan but ever since the release of Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate the series popularity has been increasing outside Japan. Now with Monster Hunter: Worlds stated for release for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One 26th January and with Monster Hunter XX or Double X being released for the Nintendo 3DS and Switch(Monster Hunter XX is as of writing this review a Japan exclusive with no date set for a western release so far). It stands to show how much the series has grown in these past 13 years and if you feel like you want to start building up your hunting portfolio, there's no other better way to start than with Monster Hunter: Generations.

Official Trailer

Note: I am sorry for the lack of screenshots but game is on a 3ds so cannot get anything decent. As always, I review the games when bought and edit the review for steemit.

Generations is actually my favorite Monster Hunter game now, because they added so much cool stuff. It makes local multi-player cool again. Or you can play online, but that's not nearly as fun. Also, for my 3DS write ups I was taking pictures of my screen with my camera, and then editing them on my PC. It's kind of a pain in the ass.

I am pretty stoked about the release of Monster Hunter: Worlds and can be potentially my favorite monster hunter game. I think what makes the monster hunter so fun is that multiplayer aspect of the game. That is actually a nice idea. Little too much work but way better than posting those random screens out there.

I'm pretty excited about Monster Hunter world too, but I'm kind of mad at them already, because they backtracked on making it cross platform! I was going to buy it for PS4, but my boyfriend and I play together, and now that'd mean we'd have to buy two PS4s which isn't happening. So, we have to wait for the PC release.. which is an undetermined date right now. ;-; Yeah, it's not too difficult once you get the hang of it. I mostly just had to reduce the sharpness on the photos to avoid those lines showing up that happen when you take a photo of a screen haha. They do sell capture cards for 3ds, but they require special installation, they're a tad pricey, and I already had the camera soooo.. improvise. xD
