Ok so one of the questions I’ve been seeing more and more of lately while looking around on Steemit is what Steem Power is equivalent to what number of dollars on an upvote. Well generally its not that easy as you Steem Power does not automatically equate to an exact number (depending on what you are voting on). For example if you’re voting on a brand new post then you can see what your power is worth at www.steemd.com/@username.

So the number there is what your Steem power counts towards a new post. One thing that people often are confused about is on page 19 of the Whitepaper where it states that the payouts are non-linear. So what this means is that your influence is going to be different on a brand new post as opposed to one that has accrued thousands of dollars already. So for a post with a lot of money you could have an impact worth 10 or 100 times what your new upvote value is.

Another aspect to consider is that each account has voting power in an attempt to prevent people liking every article. This way if someone likes a lot of different posts the value of their upvote will decrease for each because the power is being spread through multiple posts.

If there’s anything I’m missing or you want to add please comment!

I am not sure how your vote affects the author. But for you personally, if I am not mistaken, it is better to be the first one to upvote 30 minutes after an article is posted. If you upvote earlier, the reward will go to the author. If after many others - you will receive much less.
