So a meteorite exploded way above Greenland today. 

We pass through the Taurid meteor stream twice a year. Once at the end of July and once at the end of October, roughly. 

We can’t see the earlier stream because it comes from the sun side of our orbit. But the rocks are still there. 

There is a lot of circumstantial evidence that the later stream caused major destruction 5 to 12 thousand years ago. In the scheme of astronomical things, these rocks are very small. But even a small rock, a few hundred meters in diameter would wreak extreme destruction on the earth. 

As far as being prepared it would need underground bunkers, oxygen supplies, artificial lighting systems for plant growth, the whole bit. In a large strike the entire atmosphere would catch fire. 

So here’s hoping that doesn’t happen any time soon!
