In Lara State, Venezuela, there are many beautiful places. Lara covers an area of 19,800 km², about half the size of Switzerland (41,285 km²). Two places in the state stand out as unique: Yacambú National Park and Dinira National Park, where the famous Wine Waterfall is located (I hope to visit the latter someday). Today, I’ll share my trip to Yacambú National Park, the most humid park in the state, located in the Andes Mountains of Venezuela.

Getting to this park is extremely difficult. The road is like a dream, but challenging. You need to take the ascending highway from the town of Sanare, and to truly enjoy the experience, you must leave early if you're coming from Barquisimeto.

From Barquisimeto, you have to pass through Quíbor, drive along the road to Sanare, go through Palo Verde, then cross the town of Sanare, and finally take the road to Yacambú National Park.



After more than an hour and a half of driving on a lush road—truly the most beautiful I’ve seen in central Venezuela—we arrived at Yacambú National Park, which is managed by the National Parks Institute (INPARQUES). The day was humid, everything was green, and a wooden sign greeted us majestically. We drove slowly due to the damp conditions, which is why it took us so long.

In Venezuela, national parks are protected by the constitution, and there are strict environmental protection laws. That’s why they’re overseen by INPARQUES.

To enter the park, we had to open the gate ourselves. It was lightly raining, and the park rangers were in the entrance cabin. The ranger cabin was beautiful—built from wood with a unique design.

The entrance fee is $2 USD per person, and parking costs $1. Everything must be paid in cash, either in physical dollars or bolívares at the equivalent exchange rate. They don’t accept electronic payments or card transactions because there’s no cell service or electrical wiring.

I spoke with the park ranger, and since I only had a $20 bill, we agreed I could pay when leaving. In the end, she couldn’t find change, but they still let us in. After all, it’s a long journey to reach this paradise.

The entrance to the park is stunning. That day, the rain and fog made everything look even more exotic. The park is extremely humid and breathtaking. The rangers instructed us to park our motorcycle and speak with another ranger who would give us further directions.

The entrance has several dirt paths. I liked reading a sign that warned against cutting and burning trees. The park must be protected because it’s one of the greatest natural treasures of Lara State.

The second ranger cabin was set farther back, behind a gigantic tree. The view was picturesque and cinematic—a dreamlike place full of energy that’s hard to describe.

Near the cabin, there was a nursery. I liked how it was built, using only natural materials. In Venezuela, it’s common to grow trees in plastic bags before transplanting them to more suitable environments.

What caught my attention was a sign in the nursery encouraging environmental conservation, apparently made by a local school. The nursery is the first real experience inside Yacambú National Park.

After parking, we spoke with the second ranger. She began by explaining that the park was built during the military dictatorship of President Marcos Pérez Jiménez. I didn’t know that—he was responsible for many of Venezuela’s major infrastructure projects.

The ranger was very kind and told us there were many waterfalls in the park, but due to the rain and risk of landslides, only two were accessible that day.

I decided to explore the surroundings and observe the trees. Being a humid park located between 500 and 2,280 meters above sea level, the vegetation is abundant. I took some incredible pictures—truly like something out of a movie.

The natural diversity gives the park a nostalgic '80s vibe, even though it’s very much of this era. The fog is thick, and the cold is intense. I didn’t check the temperature on my phone, but here’s a tip: if you don’t like the cold, bring gloves and a scarf.

As I walked into the park, I found a trail that looked like it belonged in a fairy tale. The fog hung heavily among the tree branches. Everything was beautiful. The pure air was refreshing.

There was one path in particular that I really liked, winding between the trees. Everything was perfectly aligned—the trees, the fog, the fallen leaves, the dim sunlight. I took a photo of my brother walking ahead of me.
