Personalmente me considero a mí mismo un Geek y en los últimos días he estado publicando artículos sobre el Universo Cinematográfico de Marvel en la comunidad @HIVE-CON, espacio dentro de la plataforma #Hive donde me siento bastante cómodo, ya que fomenta la creación de contenido relacionado con la cultura Geek. Por ello, he decidido escribir este artículo en el que intentaré aclarar desde mi punto de vista, las dudas más comunes sobre lo que verdaderamente se está diciendo cuando se califica a alguien como Geek y las diferencias de este estereotipo con otros con los que suele confundirse.
Desde mi perspectiva, actualmente se ha estado desvirtuando el termino Geek y debido al nivel de popularidad de algunos contenidos de tipo Geek, muchas personas creen serlo simplemente por consumir este tipo de contenidos. Me parece que está ocurriendo algo similar a lo que ha venido sucediendo con el termino Hacker, pues se ha difundido la idea de que un Hacker es exactamente lo mismo que un pirata de internet, alguien que roba información y comete delitos informáticos, cuando realmente un hacker es alguien con conocimiento supremamente avanzados en cuanto a sistemas de seguridad informática y por lo tanto (igual que cualquier otro profesional) puede utilizar sus capacidades de forma licita o ilícita según lo decida.
Tiempo atrás, específicamente en los años anteriores a la última década del siglo XX, el termino anglosajón Geek fue utilizado de forma peyorativa por quienes no tenían demasiada relación con las computadoras, como una forma de referirse a quienes estaban obsesionados con el uso de aquel novedoso aparato tecnológico y que dedicaban la mayor parte de su tiempo a estar frente a un monitor realizando tareas a las que las demás personas ignoraban por completo, lo que les hacía volverse sujetos poco sociales, ensimismados y retraídos.
En aquel momento, se veía a los Geeks como perdedores que desperdiciaban su vida jugando con las computadoras y observando determinado tipo de programas televisivos. Según se puede leer en la enciclopedia digital [Wikipedia](https://es.wikipedia.org/), el glosario de argot hacker llamado Jargon File, atribuye el origen de la palabra Geek al termino usado para llamar a los fanáticos de un antiguo personaje de carnaval que solía arrancar la cabeza a los pollos.

It seems to me that something similar to what has been happening with the term Hacker is happening, since the idea has spread that a Hacker is exactly the same as an Internet hacker, someone who steals information and commits computer crimes, when really a Hacker is someone with supremely advanced knowledge of computer security systems and therefore (just like any other professional) can use his abilities legally or illegally as he chooses.
Some time ago, specifically in the years before the last decade of the 20th century, the Anglo-Saxon term Geek was used in a pejorative way by those who did not have much relationship with computers, as a way of referring to those who were obsessed with the use of that novel technological device and that they spent most of their time in front of a monitor performing tasks that other people were completely unaware of, which made them become unsocial, self-absorbed and withdrawn subjects.
At the time, Geeks were seen as losers who wasted their lives playing computers and watching certain kinds of television shows. Sin embargo, con el paso del tiempo y la popularización del uso de la tecnología informática, el número de personas que poseen conocimientos sobre computación ha crecido enormemente, además ahora estas personas tienen un valor mucho mayor para la sociedad, ya que todas las profesiones actualmente se ven afectadas por la tecnología computacional y requieren de individuos con este tipo de conocimientos.
En consecuencia, ser un fanático de las computadoras y otros dispositivos tecnológicos y medios digitales, ya no es algo negativo, por el contrario, puede ser muy positivo, no solo en lo que respecta a la generación de ingresos económicos, sino también al relacionamiento social con otras personas.
El haber crecido en un mundo en el que los avances de la ciencia y la proliferación de los equipos de computación es tan elevada, ha hecho que buena parte de los millennials y centennials sean actualmente Geeks, personas que se relacionan muy bien con la tecnología y que tienen como pasatiempo el consumo de expresiones artísticas relacionadas con la cultura pop, en espacial las obras del género de la Ciencia Ficción, tanto literarias, como televisivas y cinematográficas.
Pero, ¿significa esto que todos los jóvenes y quienes se relacionan con las computadoras u otros dispositivos tecnológicos inteligentes o ven en algún momento películas de superhéroes son Geeks? Mi respuesta a esta pregunta es un rotundo NO, aunque una de las características más difundidas de los Geeks, es disfrutar de las películas de Superhéroes, no es la única.
Utilizar un teléfono inteligente durante todo el día para chatear por WhatsApp y revisar actualizaciones de Facebook e ir al cine con tu pareja a ver la nueva película de la Mujer Maravilla o de Viuda Negra, no te convierte automaticamente en un Geek, la cultura Geek es mucho más que eso y está relacionada con una manera de entender el mundo, es una forma de vida que se enfoca en el deseo por adquirir nuevos conocimientos.

# ¿Quién es realmente un Geek?
El Geek es alguien que ama verdaderamente a la tecnología, no por tener el equipo que está de moda en el momento y por obtener cierto estatus social a causa de poseer determinado dispositivo, como cuando alguien comprar un iPhone de última generación solo para presumirlo frente a los demás, sin siquiera saber utilizarlo más que para chatear. En cambio, este tipo de personas realmente conoce y domina plenamente los dispositivos que adquiere y los desea para sacar provecho real de ellos.
Es así como muchos Geeks suelen ser usuarios del sistema operativo GNU/Linux, aun cuando este es gratuito, no es popular y la mayoría de las personas lo asumen como un software complicado y defectuoso, pero quienes realmente conocen sobre sistemas operativos saben apreciar sus ventajas.
Son personas que se encuentran fascinadas por el avance de la ciencia, les gusta poner en práctica el producto de esos avances y experimentar para adquirir conocimientos de forma práctica y autodidacta, de modo que un Geek no se limita a ser un simple admirador de la tecnología, es un usuario activo y proactivo de ella. Esto se debe a que en realidad la pasión de un Geek es el conocimiento y el intercambio de ideas con otras personas con preferencias similares a las suyas, las cuales encuentra en comunidades (por lo general en línea o virtuales) que se reúnen en torno a esos temas de interés.
Si un Geek es fanático del Hardware, muy probablemente también tendrá conocimientos de electrónica y haya armado sus propios dispositivos con componentes como las placas de circuito de Arduino o Raspberry Pi. Así mismo, cuando un Geek siente afinidad por el Software es muy común que también domine algunos lenguajes de programador, si le interesa el arte digital de seguro tendrá conocimientos sobre diseño gráfico, si le gustan los videojuegos terminara desarrollando uno y esto no solo se cumple en el área técnica, si esta clase de personas presenta gustos como la lectura, en algún momento se motivara a escribir, si le gusta la música, ejecutará algún instrumento y si le gusta el cine quizá se involucre en la producción de video.
La ciencia ficción es uno de los gustos más comunes entre los Geeks y eso tiene un sentido lógico, estas personas poseen una imaginación muy desarrollada y en su afán por adquirir conocimientos y analizar el mundo que les rodea, se plantean preguntas que van incluso más allá de lo que la ciencia ha alcanzado a resolver y explicar. Algunos creen, que a las personas a quienes les gusta la ciencia ficción, simplemente les gusta debido a que son jóvenes tontos e ingenuos con un excesivo grado de credulidad, que son capaces de dar por ciertas historias incoherentes.

La ciencia ficción o mejor dicho la buena ciencia ficción, presenta situaciones alegóricas a las del mundo real, muchas veces con basamentos científicos, en las que se exageran acontecimientos con el fin de hacernos considerar lo que ocurriría, si se dieran verdaderamente algunos de esos hechos.
Por otro lado, si bien la Ciencia Ficción es el género literario y cinematográfico por antonomasia entre la comunidad Geeks, también la Fantasía ocupa un espacio importante, aunque secundario, entre los gustos de este grupo de personas, quizá debido a que no solo la tecnología es un medio por el que se encausa la imaginación y el deseo de explorar nuevas realidades que presentan individuos, sino que la espiritualidad y lo paranormal representan un camino por el que es posible conducir esos pensamiento. Sin embargo, es mucho mayor la afinidad de los Geeks por la Ciencia Ficción, debido a que su relación con el conocimiento científico es mayor y es más frecuente entre ellos el agnosticismo religioso, en cambio la afinidad con la espiritualidad, la cual se relaciona con la fantasía, es mucho menor entre estas personas.
Tambien es necesario dejar claro, que el termino Friki no es exactamente equivalente al de Geek, aunque puede parecer muy similar, ya que se refiere a personas que presentan exagerada afición por determinadas expresiones artísticas o procedimientos técnicos y por tanto adoptan comportamientos, conductas e incluso apariencias que pueden ser catalogadas por las demás personas como extrañas o extravagantes. Por ejemplo, esos fanáticos de Elvis Presley que continúan vistiéndose como él hoy en día, son personas que podemos catalogar perfectamente como Frikis, pero para nada son Geeks.
Otro estereotipo que suele compararse y confundirse mucho con el de Geek es el de Nerd. Seguramente en el pasado la linea que separaba a estos dos grupos de personas era más delgada, pero en la actualidad los Geeks se diferencian fácilmente de los Nerds, ya que un Nerd es alguien con un alto nivel intelectual y conocimiento muy elevado sobre determinadas áreas (no necesariamente relacionadas a la informática) y que carece de capacidades sociales, presentando una gran timidez, personalidad introvertida, fragilidad física y un estilo de vestir reñido con la moda.
Mientras que los Geek son mucho más sociales, extrovertidos y apegados a las tendencias de la moda, aunque no al nivel de otros tipos de personas. En cuanto a la capacidad intelectual también podría decirse que existe una diferencia, aun cuando esta no es estricta, pero por lo general los Nerd poseen una capacidad intelectual que supera por lejos la del promedio y se aproxima a la de un genio, en cambio un Geek no necesariamente sea demasiado inteligente, aunque suelen superar la media, pero su característica es el deseo de aprender cada día más, aunque no sean superdotados.
