Hard work pays back, am I right? But what is with weird work? Like ironing several meters of fabric on the floor. In which way will this pay back…? Questions I asked myself last week while wandering cranky and helpless through the halls of IKEAS underbelly. Read a long intro about my studio renovation and find out more about my newest sewing project, a lovely coat with a Peter Pan collar.  For years now I tell you that I only have a very tiny table for sewing and no table at all for pattern and fabric cutting. After Corona subsided here so far that my husband is out of the home office, we decided to renovate our workroom and transform it into a studio for me (Woot woot). We moved our kitchen table into the studio (it’s the same table we use as a Computer desk) to create one long working space for me, so that I can sit there and paint, write or sew. We even had the grand plan to buy another table for the sewing machines and arrange it in a right angle so that the machines will not block the light from the window.  Great plan, yes. So, back to the beginning. We drove full of hope to the nearest IKEA and were able to find a table plate with the right measurements and even better, with adjustable legs. The latter is important as our room has a kind of ledge which hides the heater plumbing. A “normal” table would be standing 15 cm afar from the wall, but adjustable legs would remedy this problem. Equipped with a receipt for the plate and four legs we went into the IKEA market hall where you can pick up bigger things. Table plate: check. First table leg: check. Second table leg: check. Third table leg: ahem??! Yeah, funny they delivered us a table with two legs. After a lot of searching the shop assistant was able to organise a third one which looked a bit used, but surprise, we did not want a table with three legs. I was so disappointed… I hate if there is (more) chaos (than normal) in my room and I really wanted to see if our plan with the tables worked out.  Back home without my husband had the wonderful idea to borrow a quite similar table from friends (its smaller, but has the same height) and we instantly set it up, only … the ledge, you remember? The new table must stand directly at the wall or it would not fit. And as the borrowed one does not have adjustable legs, we improvised and used – tada – books as legs :-DDDD Several problems solved at once. The table fits and I have a lot more space in my cupboards because a whole cupboard full of books changed its destination into being table legs :-DDD This is one week past and with renewed hope we will today drive again to IKEA… --- But although my room is full moving tables, half cleared cupboards and still far away from tidied up, I did manage to sew a coat. [Last time I sewed a coat](https://peakd.com/needleworkmonday/@neumannsalva/how-to-sew-a-coat-while-ruling-the-world) I wanted to be crowned ruler of the world, but no fear, this time I will be modest and graciously accept accolades in the comment to section. 🤣 I am joking, I hope you know this…  The coat is a project I am in love with for a longer time. It is from a German sewing book which translate roughly into “[the wardrobe of Rosa P.](https://rosape.de/2018/08/blaettern-im-rosa-p-kleiderschrank/)” Rosa P. being the author :-D The coat is a mix between dress and coat and the book delivers two versions of the pattern; one which is more a dress because of the thin fabric, and one made from a heavy linen fabric. The coat has a cute Peter Pan collar, gathers at the waist, and closes with big buttons. To be honest, it looks like one of the wide dresses I so love only disguised as a coat :-DDD I already sewed some of the garments from this book so I was sure the sizing has a lot of built in ease. Accordingly, I used size 38 for the body and size 40 for the armholes and the bottom part. By the way it would have been totally different if I went with the sizes/measurement the book suggests. Then I would have used 40 for the bust, 42 hip and 44 for the waist. Finished garments measurements are such an important information in sewing books in my eyes, which sadly is missing in this book.  Back to the coat. You already saw me ironing the fabric, which is a kind of stretchy jeans fabric (I still haven’t burned it to determine the exact fibre content :-D). The material is lovely to work with and I could sew the whole coat in a very short time. The only part which was a bit tricky was the dollar, but here I had help from the sewing course… annoyingly the teacher does not want to explain the techniques, but simply wants to sew it herself. I knew this already and I fear I was a bit rude and pulled the coat out of her hands to sew it myself. Still, I am unsure if I can replicate the technique she used for the collar (without a facing).  Here you can see me wearing it during the course, to find the perfect length for sleeves and hem. I am fairly satisfied with the fit and am pondering if it will be too big, if I try make it again in thin fabric as a dress? What do you think? That’s it. The coat is still in this nearly finished stage. And there is a reason (don’t laugh) I am pondering to dye it. 😁 But I find it hard to decide on the color, as the fabric dye cannot lighten the present brownish color, it can only make the whole fabric darker. I am pondering to whether dye it completely brown or try out a red or lilac. I made this color test with alcoholic markers, but I am very unsure how the real fabric will behave.  The first photo shows all colors I can buy Dear Needleworkes, please help. Do you have experience/ideas how it will turn out? I love that you are making a coat! And I think you are very brave the way you have those books balanced to hold up the table, lol. I have baseboard heat too but mine isn't covered - in fact you can't cover it or the heat won't come out - so what is a ledge in your home is open radiator vent type things in mine, but about the same size. It is very interesting with the furniture being stuck out from the wall sometimes. 😂 I can't tell you how many times I've lost a pillow down the side of the bed, or a cat (coughYuancough) has lept into the abyss and needed help getting back out. Wait! I have an IKEA meme! ;)

Love love love the ikea mem. Especially after yesterday evening and another trip of hell into the store. THey made a mistake with the receipt, half of the things we wanted to buy were sold out (again) and we had to wait outside (because of Corona) to get our orders. But the upside, I have a table with four legs now 🎉 And with the precarious book-construction: during our time at university my husband had a very tiny apartment and built all his cupboards from books and then filled them with books. Not sure if I have some photos from back then… And with the plumbing: I fear my technical vocabulary is missing. The pipes are not the heater, but they support the radiator. Wait I’ll make another photo as they are open in the rest of the rooms.  They go through the complete house and make funny noises… But I feel you on the gaps between furniture and wall, hate this, these are like black holes where a lot of pencils, yarn and hooks are living. But a cat… wow… slim cat :-D

Oh I see what you mean. Mine doesn't have the tall radiator part, the bottom of the wall is all the radiator, like this:  And actually, it was Yuan, who is the chonker, that jumped between the bed and the wall. It's probably why he got stuck. ;) I think the mattress and boxspring allowed a little leeway on that side too.

Even with some inconveniences, I'm glad you can have a more organized space for your creativity workshop, the books are so wonderful that they even work as a support. I love the coat-dress, it looks beautiful, too bad the teacher didn't explain all the tricks, I imagined your face when you took the dress off. I think the coat looks very nice in the original fabric. I think if you are going to make a dress, you would have to reduce the measurements a bit. Lots of love.

I am so glad, when our renovation is finished. I am not a super duper neat person, but I cannot work in chaos. It blocks every creative thought. So, I am happy to tell we yesterday bought the real table with 4! legs :-) And thank you so much for the compliment, I am also happy that I made something that fits me and is not a desaster. Even nicer since the fabric was so cheap. But I did not felt good in the beige/brown… I guess Someone which a less chalky complexion would look good in it, but not me. I think my skin tone resembles @tibaire new leprechauns :-DDDD So, I bought black dye today and hope it will come out uniformly black.

Am happy to see that you are setting up your place already and the tables to will ease your stress of working on the floor. I have also got some to buy list of tables iron working tools and one other needed interlocking machine You find some piece of mind when you have all the set materials to do some clean jobs. Weird work wont pay back but just somehow people might find some interest in what you consider weird. I like your coat first and foremost, a thick coat for a cold season and the fabric pattern looks appealing to me already. Coat made of a thinner fabrics would feel good to be worn as regular dresses just like the one in the pattern book. Light and less weight. I like the color just as it is, and I wish you do not dye it, but if peradventure you did be sure it comes out more beautiful than this else I will knock myself 😊😁. Recently I have only learnt how to make jackets with a cut together collar, my next practicals might come around making this kind of collars as well but I just don't know what it is with people who hoard knowledge each time you need information about how to sew something, they always want you to figure it out, but that help me in a way to so that I can also replicate something even when my tutor is no longer there. Nice work you have done for your working area and the coat too.

Yeahhhh I am also very happy to have a table soon (less kneeling) we yesterday went to Ikea and found the table with 4! legs, so I can give back the borrowed one 🎉. And thank you so much for the lovely words about the coat. I am also really satisfied that I made something that fits me (and is not a disaster :-DDDD) But you guessed right, I just bought dye :-D I think the fabric is nice in the beige brown, but sadly not on me. I look even paler, like a chalk in it… But I was boring and unadventurous and bought black dye. Hopefully it will result in a uniformly black fabric (without blotches) I think I will get much more wear out of the coat when it is black. Peter Pan collar is much simpler than a normal jacket or blouse collar. I think it would be no problem at all for you. ANd with the teacher… (mine I mean) I fear she simply is no real teacher. She does not prepare any lessons or tries to explain things. She simply wants to sew herself, but in my eyes this is not enough to lead a payed sewing course… Sadly there is no alternative here. If yours want that you figure things out, (if I understood right) and then check the result, this is much better for the learning process in my eyes, but could be exhausting. Mine just wants to sew and have people talking with her (the other participants are talking a lot 😱)

Wow!!! this style suits you very much. I think you did the right thing by not letting your teacher sew this for you. after all, this is the only way we all learn something new for us. I like this color in the photo. but I understand that photographs do not always convey the color of the fabric correctly. so I'm curious to see what you decide about this and really want to see the finished coat. you and your husband are great out of the situation with the table! only I think, what if you need some of those books that serve as table legs? ))))
