After working a half day this past Saturday, my girl Lindsey and I decided to take a spontaneous road trip over to Iowa. Why not, right?
Neither of us had ever been there before, and it would be nice to just get away for the night.

I wanted to get my selfie with the state line sign, but it was on the bridge over the Mississippi river. So, my response was to hang out the car window and try and snap a picture of the sign while we drove under it.
Moments before I took the selfie, my hat blew right off my head! I watched it flip through the wind and onto the bridge right as I pressed the shutter button, as you can see in my face..
Luckily, I didn't drop my camera to try and catch it!

The next day, on our way back over the bridge heading home, we saw my hat laying up against the barrier! Lindsey whipped a U-turn and we went back over the bridge, with her stopping and holding up traffic for me to jump out and grab it.
It's pretty awesome I was able to recover it, and my apologies to the upset man behind us who was honking and confused..

We went about an hour past the state line into Fairfield, Iowa. We didn't have much of a plan other than show up, find some food, and hopefully a place to stay, and just explore and have fun.. which we did!

While trying to locate a hotel we found online, we saw a sign for a sushi restaurant and Lindsey got really excited about it. So of course, we treated ourselves to some delicious sushi.

We tried finding a decent place to stop and have a drink afterwards, but unfortunately the places we found were still closed due to covid-19. There was some cool graffiti to see in the process though..

The next day, we explored around town some just to see what it had to offer. We stopped to see the Mariachi Vedic Observatory, which I have no idea about any of it! It was still interesting enough to see though.

Aside from cruising around to see some old barns, we made a quick stop at the local skatepark.

Unfortunately, it was still early in the day and I, with much shame, am out of shape.. so there wasn't much skating to be done. I was able to throw down a few tricks and skate the bowl a little, but that was about it. There is a clip from it on my Instagram, which you can see on my page @nicksmitley. It wasn't a super impressive park, but it was nice for how small it was.

Maybe in the future I'll find myself back there and I'll be able to skate the park properly!
