A pine tree seed has sprouted on the rocks although it will not grow as there isn't enough to sustain its root and that is part of the reason why plants produce so many seeds: the success rate is going to be small. There is a pine tree on the neighbour's property and the cones open in August, an extremely windy month and the winged seeds make their way up to my place and sprout when the summer rains fall. The first time I saw a sprouted seedling, I thought it looked like something that grows on a coral reef although it's logical to expect that a plant that doesn't have leaves, isn't going to start off with any, either. The sprouting seed also lacks the familiar cotyledons, aka. "seed leaves" and belong to the Gymnosperm family of plants. Pines are an alien invasive species where I live and so I always pull up the seedlings when I see them.
