El aislamiento en absoluto en odontología nos permite mayor visualización de la pieza dentaria a tratar, así  como tambien seguridad al momento de tratar a los pacientes, evitando la contaminación cruzada del operador hacia el paciente a pesar que al principio se puede dificultar esta técnica, para la colocación de la grapa y dique, pero todo esta en la práctica, el aislamiento absoluto es una barrera de protección ante la contaminación, también el mismo nos permite trabajar en un ambiente mucho mas seco por lo que permite una mayor adhesión del material a restaurar, por lo que el tratamiento resultará más exitoso para el paciente.

Las ventajas que posee el aislamiento asoluto es el buen acceso que nos permite para tener un campo operatorio limpio, separa los téjidos blandos de la cavidad bucal, mayor seguridad al trabajar para el paciente ya que este no permite la deglución accidental de algún instrumento odontológico, reduce la contaminación de la saliva así  como también de otros fluidos. El odontólogo trabaja de una mejor manera en todos los tratamientos de operatorias que esten bajo ailasmiento absoluto.

El aislamiento absoluto también posee sus desventajas, dificulta la respiración ya que en algunos casos el dique se ubica por encima de las fosas nasales, es de gran incomodidad para aquellos pacientes que sean respiradores buconasales o totalmente bucales, la colocación de la grapa causa incomodidad por lo que siempre antes de colocar el ailasmiento debemos infiltrar o anestesiar intrapapilar para que no moleste la grapa, algunos pacientes suelen sufrir cierta alergia al latex, puede causar cansancio en la cavidad bucal ya que el paciente siempre esta con la boca abierta.

​Los instrumentos que debemos usar para el aislamiento absoluto, son el dique de goma rectangular comúnmente es de latex pero pueden existir otros de distintos materiales como silicona y distinto grosor, pero se debe hacer una selección del más pertinente para el paciente estos se pueden estirar varias veces, para que no se rompan con gran facilidad.

The instruments to be used for absolute isolation are the rectangular rubber dam, commonly made of latex, but there may be others made of different materials such as silicone and of different thicknesses, but a selection must be made of the most appropriate for the patient, these can be stretched several times so that they do not break easily.

También esta el perforador de dique, este instrumento se utiliza para producir cortes circulares en el dique de goma, este posee distintos diametros circulares este instrumento suele ser muy versatil y esto viene dado por la variedad de los agujeros que presenta, en el aguajero que se realiza debe ser introducido el diente que vamos a tratar.

Estan las grapas, que estan un sistema de retención para el dique la mismas se colocan en las estructuras dentarias, poseen unas aletas en las que se inserta el portagrapa para mover las mismas, retirarlas y colocarlas en su lugar, por último podemos encontrar el arco de portadique que este es un arco circular este permite sostener el dique para pue pueda estar muy bien estirado.
