A THING OR TWO ABOUT CONSISTENCY

For someone who has been writing almost every day for the past 3 years, I can say I have developed a habit that has not only paid me financially but also improved my skill and creativity. It wasn’t always like this–churning out content every day. I have been writing blogs since 2010 but not at this pace. Some things had to change before I could operate on this level and in this post I will be sharing some of them with you.

Being consistent or developing any habit takes time and that is the most work you have to do. It is a difficult process to form new habits. Often many people never get into doing something long enough to make that part of their routine and I would attribute that to a **lack of passion**. It is hard to stick to anything you do not love or enjoy. For instance, many people who join the hive blockchain want to make money but don’t enjoy writing, so they end up writing poorly or losing interest over time.

You exert twice the effort to perform any task you do not enjoy and that often leads to burnout. Even those who enjoy the said task experience burnout. It is often difficult to gain momentum after you’ve suffered from burnout. At this point, there are so many reasons not to continue. You are tired; the task is not as rewarding as you expected, or you want to do something different. This is the point most people break.

Burnouts are fine. It is only an indicator that you need rest which is something we do not value as creators. There is this wrong perception that you need to perform at a certain level every time to be consistent and most people stop trying once they fall short of their lofty standard. However, consistency has little to do with high performance. For instance, I am not going to churn out great articles every day; I am not going to be able to engage and give my blog the attention it needs every day. There are days when I can only do the barest minimum and that is fine because during those downtimes I recharge and find my spark again.

So you have to come to terms with the fact that you cannot operate at an optimal level all the time and that is not required to be consistent. Consistency has to do more with dedication. You need to be competent enough to show up every day irrespective of how you feel.

The other challenge most people face when trying to be consistent is maintaining their flow. The flow state is simply a time or phase where you perform a task with ease. Everyone has experienced this at some point in their life and tends to set that as a standard of performance which is counter-intuitive because no one can perform at that level all the time. However, you can stay attune with your creativity. One way to achieve this is by knowing your source which often is external. I know we all like to believe that we are the source of our strength and creativity but that isn’t always the case and sometimes you might fail yourself.

As a creative, I have learnt that my source of inspiration comes from my ecosystem. The more I interact with my ecosystem the better my ideas and output, with little chance of fatigue. We feed off the energy around us and it is paramount to surround yourself with positive energy. This way you are about work consistently and maintain your creative flow.

So in summary, to be consistent you need to find your passion and set realistic targets for yourself. This way you are able to follow through with your task and develop a healthy routine.

Well, I experience a lot of burnout. My own definition of consistency is being able to fuel your passion irrespective of the change in circumstances, like not earning well, or not finding the hunger to replicate that energy. In reality, different people have what works for them. Nevertheless I totally agree with you when you say one don't have to give in that energy everytime to show they're consistent.

Passion makes you consistent in whatever you do. If you don't have that passion, you get discouraged when you don't get the upvote you desire. But its the passion that keep driving you whether or not you get rewarded
