 Today, the 20th of October, the army opened fire at peaceful protesters. There are allegedly over a hundred people injured, some arrested. We saw widespread violence in Lagos Nigeria today. In Orile, a neighbourhood close to mine, a police officer and station was burnt. In other parties of the states, there were cases of thugs vandalising properties and extorting private motorists. The Lagos state governor declared an impromptu 24hour curfew which raised a lot of eyebrows. The protesters at Alausa and lekki decided to hold their ground. Around 6 pm soldiers opened live rounds at peaceful protesters. This was after the governor had shifted the curfew to 9 pm. These were peaceful protesters exercising their fundamental human rights. I am devasted, to say the least. I've not witnessed violence of this nature in my lifetime. What makes things worse is that the government are the instigators of this violence. From policing maiming, killing and arresting peaceful protesters to sending thugs to sabotage peaceful protests. Now they've involved the army. Mind you, these people are simply exercising their fundamental human right and demanding justice for those who have been brutalised by the notorious sars unit of there police force. I watched the BLM movement and how people in America protested against police brutality. It never got to the point where the army or police opened fire on their citizens. Unfortunately, in this part, if the world, people's life and property do not matter to the political elites and they don't hide it. Things might get very dark here in Lagos where I live. There is a lot of anger in the air and I don't think the presence of the army will do much in curtailing the rage people feel at the moment. At some point, I thought I was going to lose my mind because I couldn't comprehend the things happening. It was too harsh of reality to be conceived. I suspected that things would escalate to this point and here we are, and there is no backing down. I am going to be signing petitions and convincing people to do the same in the coming days. We might not have weapons of mass destruction but we do have our voice which has been amplified by the pain and suffering inflicted upon us by this government. Silence is not an option. I see light at the end of the tunnel.
