About a month ago I wrote a post about an idea I had which I believed could potentially bring hundreds of people into the hive ecosystem. I put that thought out into the world hoping someone would look at it and see its merits. After much deliberation, I decided to take on the project myself (with the help of the Hivenaija team of course).

It has been barely two weeks and we have over 50 participants. It took a few flyers and sharing links to get us this far. Now 50 participants seem small considering this is a community of over 9 million people, but I am glad with the result. Asides from my love for this project, this is just an instance to show the Hive community that projects do not have to rely on the small number of people we have on the chain to grow, and there is a need to look outwards and get new people into the system.

Over the years I have seen many projects on hive die. These were projects with huge communities outside Hive. The issue has also been poor outreach programs. Most communities would rather scramble for the very few active users on the chain than go out to invite new people into the space, and I keep asking myself why many people are so afraid to talk about Hive outside the chain. I have two major theories about this issue.

The first is that most people don't care about the blockchain. For them, this is an avenue to make a quick buck (or dominance over a few) and nothing more. They are only here for the cash incentive, which is why I believe people should work a lot harder for anything they earn on Hive. I have seen how other projects task their community and still give little to nothing in return. So when I do see people take advantage of the space it runs me the wrong way.

The second reason why I think most people don't talk about Hive outside this space is shame or fear. It sounds weird to say but it is true. Most people do not want their friends and family to know about their blogs. To these people, Hive is top secret, and I understand (to some degree) why some people want to separate their digital persona from their off-chain life, but it does screw the positive network effect that comes from having people in your sphere join Hive.

There are also a group of people who do nothing but complain about the blockchain. They are unwilling to contribute meaningfully to its growth. They would rather focus on pointless debates rather than do or support something that can bring about the change they want to see on the blockchain. Hive is a permissionless blockchain. We are all allowed to grow and organise in whatever way we deem fit. This is a heterogenous community and it becomes increasingly difficult to come to a consensus about anything as the chain decentralised further. People need to align with groups/communities that share their interests and goals. This is the only way to build something substantial.

For those who have decent ideas and are sceptically about implementing them, my advice is to give your idea a shot. There are two things involved, it is either you fail or succeed. Whatever the outcome may be there is still a lot you can learn from it. We all need to contribute in our little ways to make the blockchain better and we don't need permission to do so.

Lastly, Hive is whatever you say it is. You should not restrict yourself or what you can do on Hive just to the digital space. Look at what’s happening in Ghana, Hive is providing communities with clean water. This has nothing to do with creating content. Many people may not like the initiative but it is having a positive impact in the world which matters more than stakeholders profit. Fundraising and philanthropy have also been a core part of the Hive culture. There are so many facets to Hive and we also need to broaden its scope and application.
