The Supreme Court has very clearly broadened the protection of free speech to include symbolic speech. That's why you can burn an American flag. That's why you can burn a Bible. That's why you can burn a Qu'ran. You can symbolically desecrate just about anything that you want in this country without concern of legal repercussion.

Following the philosophy that inspired the First Amendment and most First Amendment law, you need to understand that the ideas of free expression dig profoundly deep.

A lot of people think that an image of women's breasts are offensive and obscene. I know dozens of women who have posed nude. That's free expression. That's legally protected under Constitutional law. But, if you're going to complain about censorship of nude photos, you have to understand that there's a philosophical inconsistency if you're against somebody stomping a Qu'ran.

People can freely show Piss Christ on social media, without censorship while stick figures of Muhammad are banned.

Being in favor of free speech doesn't stop at the First Amendment, it stretches to the spirit of the First Amendment.

No, not all speech or expression are equal; but, all speech and expression need to be equally defended.
