It takes time to find our personal identity, to understand our skills, how we're perceived by the world, and how to best serve it. This is a frustrating period for some humans as they progress through adolescence and into adulthood. It's also an exciting time of self discovery through exploration and mentorship.

It's funny how technology can take on a human persona. If we examine many of the techs we rely on most, we’ll notice they share many properties with live organisms (see the book called The Social Organism). Looking at Virtual Reality, we can notice it moving through this self-discovery phase. VR is still realizing its functionality, understanding how to move its limbs and interact with its surroundings.

Like any developing artist or professional, VR is discovering itself through imitation. It's noticed the film genre and has tried to behave like film. It's understood gaming and has tried to move and speak like a game machine. At its core, though, VR is not yet behaving as itself.

But just like the rest of us, VR will discover its own identity.

Only then will it arrive.
