Greeting!

As you may have known I bought a NAS for my work recently. The benefits of using a NAS is countless, such as low electricity consumption, be able to let users stream data from outside of the office, that is mean a private cloud for your documents. But you only need a NAS when you need a NAS. So it takes me so long to try NAS since it first appeared.

Today I learned something useful and I cannot wait to share with you here. The topic is Port Forwarding.

First off, to understand port forwarding, you first needed to know a little bit more how your router works. Your ISP (internet service provider) assigns one IP address to you for your internet connection. All devices on the internet need a unique IP address. But hey, you have more than one device that needs to go on to the internet! Here is the router comes to rescue.

Your router has a function called NAT (Network Address Translation). The IP combine use with a port number allows devices to send and receive data from the internet under the same IP address. 

In short, it (NAT) acts as your front desk lady when there is a delivery sent to your building. Then the front desk lady now checks to see if the assigned port (recipient's name on the delivery) match anything in the previously assigned port forwarding settings (building's record of tenants' name).

And that's a simple explanation of port forwarding. Hope it helps!
