I lived in Barcelona for about a year and somehow landed a job as a tour guide almost immediately, yes I know, that's ridiculous, anyhowI got to be very familiar with most of Barcelona's famous landmarks. First you should note that the city hit a major economic boom during the industrial revolution, Catalonia as a whole was(and still is) pretty business savvy so they had tons of money sitting around and they said hey let's build some nice ass buildings. Three main architects Josep Puig i Cadafalch, Lluís Domenech i Montener and of course Antoni Gaudí would dominate what is known as the Renaixenca.  Both the buildings in the photos above and below were by the renowned aforementioned Joe PC. Aboveve is The Casa de les Punxes (1905), below is the Casa Amatller (1900).  Casade les Punxes literally means house of spikes in Catalan coming from the six pointed towers, it looks like something straight out of Rapunzel's tale. Coincidentally enough Joe PC built this as a house, or rather three separate houses for his three sisters. Casa Amatller was built as the family residence for Antoni Amatller who was the owner/master chocolatier of Barcelona's famous Chocolate Amatller empire which began almost a century before in 1797. Amatller chocolate is still kicking around today and there's a little shop inside Casa Amatller where you can buy some of that famous chocolate.
