A while ago, I met a friend named Protophe who'd spent some time living in Nova Scotia Canada.

I've actually met many people who've lived abroad,  _but this friend was special_...

You see, every language has a "textbook" version taught in language classrooms and a real, "street" version spoken by natives.

### **Secret code**

This "street" language is like  **a secret code**  that separates the "inside" natives from the "outside" learners.

So if you know the code, native speakers instantly see you differently... Almost like you're an old friend.  

Well, Protophe had a bit of an accent, which I expected.

And used mostly simple vocabulary when he spoke.

But when he said,  **"Let me put it to you this way..."**  he became an "insider," and my respect for him increased instantly. Protophe native language is French.

### **Let me put it to you this way...**

 Natives use this expression to explain something in a different way, usually to make it more clear.

A scientist, for example, might give a long, technical explanation for something...  

But if she sees that people don't understand, she might say: "**Let me put it to you this way...**  If we don't reduce the power, the factory will explode."

_(Here, to "put" means to  **say** something.)_

So, "Let me  **say my point again**  in a way that's easier to understand..." is the meaning of this phrase.

We're all judged by the way we  **_look_**...

But the way we  **_speak_** gives the most powerful - and lasting - impression of all.
