Personally, I find that when I'm sitting down to write just about anything... I always have *some* sort of background noise on. Now, what background noise it is, definitely depends on what I'm writing.

For blogs, I can listen to almost anything. I tune most of it out anyhow, as I write these. For serious fiction, I usually tend toward something that fits the scene I'm trying to get out. When I was writing as a teen/in my 20s, I listened to a LOT of Jethro Tull, Alice Cooper, and Valdy on my dad's old turntable. 

These days it's all through Spotify and ranges from shit that's in languages I don't understand, to folk bands like Poor Mans Poison, to pretty much any heavy metal out there. I'm a big sucker for heavy metal being the background to battle scenes, or moments of particular badassery. 

Of course, I do sometimes also just toss on movies. I love writing dnd/ttrpg adventures while an old familiar favorite plays. Ive lost count of the number of times I've watched Willow, Equilibrium, and V for Vendetta while making tabletop shit or drawing maps. 

If I'm programming, my background is almost always podcasts. Things that make my brain work just a little without being so interesting as to take my focus. I love a good fiction pod that I can relisten to or skip back as needed.
