The Emperor had spoken thus: His death would cause mass hysteria. Fear and uncertainty would run rampant in the capital city of Esphar upon his death... and he was right. But, of course, every baron, king, emperor, or want-to-be Tyrant would say the same. It wasn't just the easy prediction coming true that cast the late Emperor's words in a new light, it was the uncovering of his true crimes that had spun the capital into an uproar.
Hundreds... perhaps thousands... of elves and dwarves had been secretly being sacrificed to extend the tyrant's life through an unholy ritual. Two hundred years of peace with the other races and it was all coming crumbling down. And now, what had begun as the largest coordinated assassination of any individual in power had grown and twisted and changed. Rage over what he'd done had spilled over, and the Raven's Guild of assassins had immediately pivoted to - for the first time in recorded history - join forces with its sibling guilds from the Elven and Dwarven nations in an effort to entirely wipe out the Faror bloodline.
Rare was it that even the Elves would see just cause to visit the sins of one man upon an entire family tree, but in this, everyone was of a singular mind. From roots to leaves, the tree must be brought down. There could be no other to sit upon the tyrant's bloodstained throne. Never again would any relation of his trigger the blood-magic tied to that cursed object. Never again would a single human control every race across the continent.
This historian would remind you though, dear reader... that while the great culling of the Faror line was, apparently, successful:
*There's many a slip, t'wixt a cup and a lip.*
---
*[Setting: Trothguard | Date: 2,654 Before current era | Event: Raven Night]*
*[Originally described as: "Empress Revasha Faror dies (731 years old) by assassination. Her entire family line is killed as well, in the single largest assassination contract in history, ending in the bloody murders of some 230 men, women, and children. The Faror name is stomped out, in a night known from that day onward as the Raven Night (due to the Ravenlords guild of assassins - seen as the largest players in the events of that night). The Emperor's Palace is magically sealed without a valid heir to the Throne. Esphar spirals into chaos."]*

It's been a while since I actually worked on any fiction. Like... way too long, honestly. I bridge the gap a *little bit* by playing things like Starforged but that writing is incomplete and I want to focus more on the game than translating it into a narrative that folks might find entertaining to read here... so it's not something I've been posting a lot of lately.
I will circle back to doing updates to our dear story of Lore, but I want to flex my free-writing/seat-of-your-pants flash fiction skills again, so I'm going to try to do more of my own prompt replies (and likely add in some from the lovely sister communities I link in every prompt).
I don't expect that these will ever come together into a single narrative, but Today's piece at least was an exploration of an event within my primary fantasy tabletop setting of Trothguard. I... hadn't honestly checked my notes before writing this. I just sat down and what ended up coming out was a bit of fiction related to this event. I had forgotten that the reigning Emperor at this time was Female... so that's a bit of a whoopsie on my part, but hey, freewrites are essentially drafts anyhow so its ALL GOOD!
