Leyn Becker entered the room slowly clutching her coat despite the heat. She looked around and sat timidly in a chair in the front row, fearing that with her myopic eyesight she would not be able to see the auctioned items well. At the ripe old age of nearly eighty she did not think she would have this strange experience of buying something by raising a shovel.
But when she learned that among the goods on sale there was also a part of Gertrud Neumann's photographic collection, she could not resist participating: she absolutely had to recover an old photo of her grandmother who captured the stormy sea and a lighthouse that no longer existed. That picture had stayed in her grandmother's living room all her life, even when Leyn and her brother had the prank of drawing on it with yellow and red markers. It was a family memory, a sweet memory that she wanted to have back with her.

Leyn Becker entrò nella stanza lentamente stringendosi nel cappotto nonostante il caldo. Si guardò attorno e si sedette timidamente su una sedia in prima fila, temendo che con la sua vista miope non sarebbe riuscita a vedere bene gli oggetti messi all'asta. Alla veneranda età di quasi ottanta anni non pensava che avrebbe fatto anche questa strana esperienza, di acquistare qualcosa alzando una paletta. 
Ma quando aveva saputo che tra i beni in vendita c'era anche una parte della collezione fotografica di Gertrud Neumann non seppe resistere dal partecipare: doveva assolutamente recuperare una vecchia foto della nonna che riprendeva il mare in burrasca e un faro che ormai non esisteva più. Quella foto era rimasta nel salotto della nonna per tutta la sua vita, anche quando Leyn e suo fratello avevano fatto la marachella di  disegnarci sopra con pennarelli gialli e rossi. Era un ricordo di famiglia, un ricordo dolce che voleva riavere con se.
