Pretty bit of mushroom

I considered doing a guessing quiz with this one; when I opened the photo on my computer I thought it looked like something from the sea. It is actually a part of a mushroom growing on a tree stump.

Conk! Conk! Did you scratch a little picture on the underside of this? From your photo  and description, it looks to me like an Artists conk, Ganoderma applanatum. They live a long time out there in the woods, clinging to a tree. You can age them with their growth rings, like you would a tree. Yours is a few years old at least, just from the rings I can see.
