What Does Decentralization Mean to me? - It means more than you can possibly imagine.
# *Thoughts*

I have been giving a thought about the idea of decentralization for quite some time now and haven't had a motivation to write it down so this initiative gave me a reason to slowly elaborate on what it means to me and what expectations I have in that regard.

Decentralized government, as opposed to a centralized one, is yet to be tested and it's up to us to keep pushing until we reach the final destination. It may be hard but we won't quit, ever...

Now, the majority of us who found a home on steem are sharing the same passion towards 2 things, that is decentralization and community.

One might argue how economic incentives are the main reason we stick around but it's simply irrational to assume that way as steem hasn't been the best investment I have made so far. But, I do think that we have more value than market shows and eventually we will find a way to keep this successful.

I believe the roots of my skepticism towards any form of central authority can be found in a broken society that blindly follows everything served to them, without questioning anything. Maybe I'm just a reserved introvert, but who gives a fuck right?

It may sound radical but when you live in a corrupted country where the political oligarchy tailored laws to suit their needs (read crimes) it becomes obvious what centralization may bring - to be more specific, our nation has been feeding those on power who settled their private interest as top priority while neglecting those in need.

# *Decentraland*

> *Decentralization—the transfer of authority and responsibility for public functions from the central government to subordinate or quasi-independent government organizations and/or the private sector—is a complex multifaceted concept.*

There are some minor deviations around the theoretical definition of decentralization, but we can all agree on some fundamentals. For me, decentralization represents the idea where the majority gets to decide (in a decentralized manner) in which direction some platform, society or anything else will move.

I feel the need to say that decentralization is often related to lack of organization, meaning that we have yet to find the perfect system which will reduce or mitigate corrupted power while enabling us to cooperate. We have been working on that for the last couple of years and as it turns out we weren't even close. It truly is frustrating to watch how centralized piece of shit Justin simply came, bought a pre-mined stake and decided to overthrow elected witnesses.

Of course, decentralization isn't something big corporations or governments would strive for as it is a direct threat to their power.

# *STEEM*

Regardless of how much I wanted to skip or avoid talking about steem, it seems inevitable... Current steem related drama is an important one as it shows how centralized entities play the power games in an attempt to take over the network.

We have been building a decentralized ecosystem for 4 years and gave countless ideas and discussions around it and it seemed like we are onto something. Every fork we made in the past was a direct result of community efforts in improving the system, not some centralized group leading the way.

I know, it would be ignorant claiming that we had perfect and flawless decentralization, but it most definitely reflected the interest of a majority as opposed to the current minority.

Some of the community members got bought by Justin, some of them were nothing more than parasites sucking the reward pull, while others embraced opportunism. To be honest I'm not even surprised.

I don't know why Justin feels entitled to govern something he has zero to none technical background of, but who cares, he has money to buy... Despite the fact I mostly control my emotions or at least tend to, this piece of shit pushed me out of my consensus, disabling me to think rationally.

Decentralization is core value every blockchain tech-based project should have, and if that's not the case then I don't see much need for it.

I know, it has been annoying, it has been exhausting and still is but if we wanna be great and take place within the first 10 we gotta show that we are able to fight malicious attacks regardless from whom they're coming from.

We want our decentralization back!

Keep up the hustle, the battle is not over... Yet...

The reality of Steem is that it was only as decentralized as @ned wanted it. Since he sold his stake and control of Stinc his preference no longer pertains. Now Sun controls that stake, and we see how DPoS actually works IRL.

DPoS simply has no relevance to decentralization, because stake is ubiquitously centralized IRL. It's not my philosophy, and I'm not proposing some fix. It's just a fact that very few individuals possess the majority of wealth on Earth, and no matter how you divide the planet geographically, every part of it is dominated by a very few specific stakeholders financially.

>"...decentralization represents the idea where the majority gets to decide..."

So, your idea isn't Steem. Steem is no different than any geographical region on Earth regarding distribution of stake, and as long as governance is determined by majority stake it never will be decentralized in the way you seek.

Not agreeing or disagreeing with your preference, simply pointing out the reality of the situation on the ground, and on the blockchain. Sun is the largest stakeholder on the platform. Due to how stake weighs on governance (VP never depletes) his stake is multiplied 30x in influence on witness elections. Unless the entire community votes en bloc for a top 20, Sun will inevitably control consensus eventually, and then Steem will be unitarily governed by Sun in whatever way he wants.

It's practically impossible to anticipate the community voting en bloc just to counter Sun's stake, and the annals of proxy.token reveal this fact. I wish things were different, but reality doesn't care what I think. It is what it is.

In order to enable the community that has undertaken some semblance of decentralized governance of Steem while @ned refrained from centralizing it to continue to do so, we will have to either vote en bloc or fork. Since Sun will fork Steem to achieve his stated goals that cannot be achieved otherwise, *Steem will fork*, and we are left with the choice of what the fork we move to will be.

I cannot code, so I cannot work to prepare a fork suitable for decentralized governance of the community to migrate to. I sincerely hope competent parties seeking that end are currently preparing for the inevitable eventuality of Steem forking, but there has not been information available to that effect I am aware of to date.

I actually think the lack of public information is a good thing, because were that information public the immediate attack by shills would be dividing the community regarding it increasingly as time went on. Informing the public upon the exigent need of choosing between whatever fork Sun creates and the hopefully decentralized option that will then be sprung on the community will minimize community division, and weaken the shills that seek to divide us and benefit would be overlords.

Frankly, that hope is the only one I see of maintaining the Steem community in anything close to it's present form.

Thanks!

The reality is that there is no perfect system out there, especially in terms of cryptocurrencies. PoW, PoS, and DPoS have obvious flaws, however, I thought it'll be easier for us to control possible negative aftermath and act accordingly in a case similar scenario occurs

I haven't thought about the possibility that some prominent community members, such as exyle and Korean community can be bought, but yet again, I was wrong. I should have taken every possibility into the equation and that's my bad for not thinking deeper.

DPoS has sacrificed decentralization(to some degree) for scalability and as it turns out it will cost us a lot. I'm not a programmer either and unfortunately, I can't participate in writing code, but I'm willing to support the hard fork as i don't think we can find the common ground with that piece of shit.

I'm ready to dump my coins and move on towards something better. Steem was a great place to start with but I'm afraid there is no other way out.

https://steemit.com/socialblockchain/@andrarchy/announcing-the-social-blockchain-working-group - Will support it in case they continue on working on it...

Fuck Justin and Fuck Tron, the only reason why I would consider fighting back are our whales who invested their money and time to make this shit work and I would feel disappointed seeing their investment fading away.

Thanks for your time, appreciate it :)

Don't kick yourself too hard. We're tiny, little sacks of obscene glop, and fortunate to be able to tie our shoes. No one can think of everything, and if we waited until we had perfect understanding nothing would ever get done.

I'm ready to move on, and will if Sun gains the ability to govern Steem at his sole option, whether there's a fork to migrate to or not. I'd prefer to migrate to a fork where many of my friends from Steem go also.
