# Splinterlands | Taunt Monsters
Since I started playing Splinterlands, I was convinced that monsters with taunt abilities would be game changers. Back then, I had only a few, namely, The Kraken from the Water Splinter and the Shieldbearer from the Life Splinter. The Taunt monsters will attract all attacks towards themselves and, therefore, save other monsters from sneak, snipe, or opportunity attacks. That makes a lot of difference as our monsters can freely attack the enemy lines from all sides while our taunt monster remains. And that's a big plus, in my opinion.
The release of the Chaos packs brought more taunt monsters to the fore, and they added as a fillip in the other splinters. For example, the Earth Splinter lacked a good taunt monster, or at least, my collection lacked one. And that's where the Mycelic Splipspawn comes into the picture.
Needless to say, the Mycelic is a taunt monster but what is remarkable is that it is a Magic monster. Until the Chaos packs, the taunt monsters I had were only melee. The melee has a chance of missing attacks, but with the Mycelic, the magic attack almost always hits the opponent. That's the great thing about the Mycelic Splipspawn. Let's see the monster in battle.

# What Game is Splinterlands?
Splinterlands is a digital card game that allows you to collect, trade, battle, rent, and even earn from the cards. ***The game gives Play to Earn a whole different meaning.*** By now, you would know that the governance token (SPS) airdrop made millionaires out of the early adopters. It still keeps giving and remains a fun and engaging game.

And this is just a tiny number. I have witnessed people getting uber-expensive cards in their pack and selling it for as high as $6500. In fact, there is a whole Splinterlands marketplace on the Hive blockchain and now on Wax too.

# Mycelic Splipspawn | An Ultra Useful Magic Monster
I have already spoken about the Mycelic's ability to taunt the opponent's monster works to our benefit. The aspect that I haven't talked much about is the Mycelic being a magic monster. The best part is that combining the Mycelic with summoners like Delwyn Dragonscale of the Dragon Splinter or Obsidian of the Earth Splinter increases its attack value by one. That means even a base Mycelic can get an attack value of three. Just imagine how deadly a maxed-out Mycelic would be.
The best way to gauge how well the Mycleic works is by witnessing it in battle. So, let's get to the fight now.
### Face Off With My Opponent!
This is how my opening screen appeared.
The monsters on the top of the screen are mine. They all are Earth Splinter monsters. I had opted for Mylor Crowling as the summoner instead of Obsidian. Mylor has thorns, so if melee attackers are used, I have a good chance of winning. Of course, from the screen, we know that the opponent has used more melee attackers.
The opponent's monsters are at the bottom of the screen. He or she has opted for Pyre as the summoner. Pyre gives all friendly monsters additional speed. That means most of them will be faster than me or equal. In other words, most of the opponent's monsters will attack first.
Hmm.. trouble at the beginning.

### The Battle Rages
By the beginning of round 2, we can clearly see that the Mycelic has done its job.
The Mycelic has taken a sizeable attack and still standing. However, it is on its last leg. However, it gave enough time for my other monsters to go full throttle on the opponent's monsters. Two of the opponent's monsters are already done for, and it seems I am looking good.
On to the next screen, then.

### And then Victory!
And here comes the moment of truth. What appeared to be my win seemed to be slipping away.
The opponent's flying monster at the end was causing my melee attacks to be missed. In addition, the Mycelic has perished, and so has my tank. That means the rest of my monsters with average health of three stands little chance against the opponent.
And I was right. The opponent's higher health monsters stood firm. The above screen shows the situation at the end of the fourth round. The next round was enough to polish off my team. ☹
Anyway, the Mycelic did its job, but my selection of monsters led to my downfall. So, yes, victory, but for my opponent.

# So, That's It | The Mycelic Still Shines Through
Although I lost the game, the Mycelic still shined through. The taunting helped, and I had the upper hand by the end of the first round. A better selection of team would have helped a better outcome. No regrets, though. 😊
I have a nearly 90% win rate with the Mycelic, and this happens to be one of that 10% where I ended up on the losing side. I think the Mycelic is an excellent monster on your team; if you don't have it, start using it. 😊
