위대한 사람을 초라하게 만드는 것

<p>사람 다 거기가 거기다라는 말을 어려서 부터 많이 들었다. 그런데 살다보니 다 그렇지만은 않다는 것도 알게 되었다. 사람은 다 거기서 거기일지 모르지만 어쩌다보면 바뀌기도 한다. 어떤 사람은 위대하게 바뀌고 어떤 사람은 초라하게 변해간다. </p>
<p>한번 위대했던 사람이 계속 훌륭하기는 쉽지 않다. 생활이라는 것이 그를 그대로 두지 않기 때문이다. 역사에 위인으로 남은 사람은 중간에 빨리 명을 다한 경우가 많다. 그러지 않고 살아 남았으면 위대한 삶을 계속하기가 쉽지 않다. 그 망할 놈의 생활이란 것 때문에 말이다. </p>
<p>원래 별 볼일 없던 사람이 어떤 계기로 위대한 인물로 거듭나기도 한다. 대부분 비극을 겪고나서인 경우가 많다. 비극은 인간을 위대하게 만든다. 비극에 영웅이 등장하는 것은 그 때문인지도 모른다. </p>
<p>요즘 조국 청문회를 둘러싸고 벌어지는 상황을 보니 마치 코미디를 보는 것 같다. 씁쓸한 코미디말이다. 한때 괜찮게 보았던 사람들이 결국은 영웅이 아니고 희극배우였다는 것을 알게 되니 우습다. 무엇이 위대한 삶을 살겠다고 맹세했던 사람들을 코미디 배우로 만들었을까? 아마도 생활이란 것 때문이 아닐까한다. </p>
<p>어떻게 하더라도 살아남아야 하니 위대한 생각을 조금씩 조금씩 포기하게 되고 결국에는 자기가 가장 경멸했던 사람이 되고 만 것이다. 아니 우리를 우울하게 만드는 것은 그들이 경멸했던 것보다 더 못한 사람이 되었다는 것이다.  거짓과 위선으로 포장된 못난이 인형이 되고 만것이다. </p>
<p>삶은 냉정하다. 코미디 배우는 결국 희극무대로 돌아가야 한다. 영웅의 대서사시의 주인공이 되려고 했지만 스스로 무너졌기에 그들이 설무대가 없어졌기 때문이다. 있어야 되지 않은 자리에 계속 남아 있는 것은 연극을 보는 관객을 괴롭게 만든다. </p>
<p>별볼일 없는 엑스트라에 불과했던 사람이 비극의 주인공이 되어 영웅으로 거듭나는 경우도 있다. 고 김용균 군의 어머니가 그렇다. 김용균을 생각하면 눈물이 난다. 내 자식나이다.  그런 아이가 장막안에서 생을 다했다니 얼마나 가슴아픈가. 노인의 죽음과 젊은이의 죽음은 다르다. </p>
<p>나이가 드니 조금씩 죽음을 맞이해야 하는 연습을 해야하는 구나 하는 생각이 든다. 그러나 그런 생각을 할 필요가 없는 어린 아이들의 죽음은 너무 가슴아프다. 해보고 싶은 것 마음대로 해보지도 못하고 죽으니 어찌 통탄스럽지 않겠는가? </p>
<p>그냥 시장에 왔다갔다하던 보통 아줌마 김용균의 어머니 김미숙은 자식을 가슴에 묻고 위대해졌다. 배움이 많은 것도 아닌 것 같은 그냥 그렇고 그런 아줌마가 위대한 인물이 된 것은 비극이다. 위대한 인물이 절대로 되고 싶어하지 않았을 그냥 보통의 아줌마는 비극의 주인공이 된 것이다. </p>
<p>인간은 원래부터 위대하거나 초라한 존재가 아니다. 아무리 배움이 많아도 조국의 부인처럼 초라한 존재로 전락하기도 한다. 아무리 초라한 존재라도 갑자기 위대한 인물이 되기도 한다. 인간을 위대하거나 초라하게 만드는 것은 그가 가진 재산이나 지식 배움 지위같은 것이 아니다. 그것은 그냥 마음을 먹는 것이다.</p>
<p>지금 우리 정부여당의 고위직에 자리잡고 있는 대부분이 인물들은 이번 조국 사건으로 원래 초라하고 별볼일없는 사람들이라는 것이 드러났다. 왜 이렇게 힘들고 시끄럽나 했더니 엑스트라를 해야 하는 사람들이 주연을 꽤차고 있어써 그런 것임을 이번에야 알았다. </p>
<p>자신의 배역에게 알맞는 자리로 되돌아가야 할 것이다. 주연은 자격이 있는 사람에게 주어져야 한다. 영웅의 서사시에 희극배우를 캐스팅할 수는 없지 않은가? 혹은 주인공에 엑스트라를 내세울수도 없는 법이다. 이제 엑스트라로 판명된 사람들은 엑스트라로 돌아가고, 희극배우로 판명난 사람들은 코미디 무대로 돌아가야 할 것이다. </p>
<p>조국 사건으로 오랫동안 나라가 시끄러웠지만 얻는 것도 있었다고 생각한다. 우리가 그동안 훌륭하다고 보았던 많은 사람들이 결국 생활을 극복하지 못한 범인보다 초라한 사람이라는 것을 확인할 수 있는 기회를 얻었다는 것이다. </p>
<p>여당중에는 박용진과 같은 중심을 제대로 잡은 사람도 있었다. 정의당처럼 가끔 혹은 때때로 아니면 어쩌다 정의를 부르짓는 사람들도 있었다. 더불어 민주는 사라지고 너나 민주하라는 사람들로 있었다. 자유한국당은 자해한국당이라고 하는 이야기를 들었다.  </p>
<p>그러나 그럼에도 불구하고 그 중에 중심을 제대로 잡는 사람들도 있었다. 우리가 할 일은 그런 사람들을 눈여겨 두고 잊지 말아야 한다는 것이다. 최소한 생활에 굴복하는 사람들이 우리를 지배하게 만들어서는 안된다.   </p>
