I am completely clueless as to what a hardfork is?? Can somebody please shed some light and maybe explain the difference between etc and eth?

Dead cat bounce, profit taking. How can etc be the real block chain of ethereum . it is the out of date blockchain. This is like saying DOS is the real windows. Keeping it on your computer and upgrading it to windows 10. Steemit hardforked

What about Ethereum in the longer term though? It seems to be  gaining popularity.

This is such an ill informed post. What a waste of the $387 dollar community money.

I have to chime in here as I can see many honest people losing money over this confusion created by big players. 

First of all, I have to explain some background from bitcoin as this matters!

Bitcoin is divided between two camps; those who want to increase block size and those who don't

Increasing block size would let more people use bitcoin to transfer money around, now you might have to wait for hours for your transactions to go  through, is this the future of money? 

The camp who doesn't want to increase block size wants to make bitcoin blockchain a some kind of baselayer for settlements, they are limiting the block size and userbase and developing their own solutions for this issue. So they are creating the issue and solution to it, these guys know how to do business! 

Talks of Hard fork were slanted as being dangerous for the community and you even got banned for it (hurray for free speech and Theymos!) , it seemed like the community wanted to use bitcoin as intented while devs under company called blockstream, funded by people associated with Bilderberg, censored and fought against such dangerous hard forks. 

So now Ethereum steps in. As you can see there is a divide between bitcoin, and one side does not want to see any succesful hard forks as they have said them to be dangerous for the ecosystem, potentially disastrous. So succesfull hard fork that Ethereum made is seen as a huge threat to these accusations by blockstream devs. We also have to remember that in ETC chain the thief is holding huge amount of tokens, tokens that are now being sold to people in hopes of making big gains. 

If people want to buy in to a chain where thief is waiting with millions of stolen funds to cash out, with no development support that is the backbone of ethereum, with no community, except people that want to see it fail eventually. Feel free to do so, but understand the mechanics that are playing behind the curtains. 

Hopefully I'm proven wrong and ETC is something other than just a way to make HF's look like bad move, even if supported by the community, and a way to pump and dump but to me it looks like for now.  Still, I would not support the acts of a thief who steals from people. If you are sick of banksters who fraud people and walk away from it and feel powerless, then the choice here is obvious. 

Eth didn't give in, and as community, acted for good - those who want to continue the ways of old systems (fraud, criminal activity) can support ETC.  Just my 50 cents. These are all opinions, don't get disheartened.

Beyond the price, I think the existence of both blockchains is quite interesting.
