black is the color of my true love's hair
chocolate coats your skin
your great-grandfathers hammered tin for the molds 
my great-grandfathers poured their chocolates in

their very different great-grandchildren
meet at a slam in a ghetto 
where we have the luxury to explore the words of a privileged genius
which is nothing next to your luxury to explore enduring pain

reverently, though, we both write
and solemnly we both speak 
and cautiously we both accept

I have a nephew who was a rising star in the urban word community of NYC back in the day, and I would often go to the competitions he was in. I wrote this after one of those events.

Interesting explanation at the end. I was trying to connect the poem to something more concrete while reading it, but couldn’t quite. The story about your nephew really helps. 

You really captured the slam style and rhythm well in the opening. I definitely hear this being performed.

Great observation! I don't remember much about writing this, but I don't think that was intentional. This is a great example of how, given room to write itself, a poem will connect more deeply. Something like that! wow so glad you saw that. I like this poem even more now! It's downright genius! Maybe I will perform it at an open mic sometime. 

Sometimes a tiny bit *said,* opens the reader's peripheral vision. Thank you so much for reading my poems so closely.

I’m beginning to see that. 

It’s funny, the assumptions we make as readers. Had I read that poem without having had any interactions with you here, I would have made certain assumptions and guesses at certain meanings, but having had interactions with you here, the way I wanted to read the poem didn’t quite connect to the images I have of you, so the explanation at the end was a big help. 

I often like to write in first person while thinking of other people/characters, even in short poems, so I can imagine that it might be confusing trying to make meaning of my poems if you always connect that first person reading to what you know about me.
