<center></center> First up, I have three haiku for you that I wrote in my usual fashion: while puttering around the house and garden, hopeful that I would remember them when I found a pen and paper to record them with. I'm getting much better at this! <center>***poetry is raking leaves in the wind***</center> <center>***pleasure is walking into a warm house***</center> <center>***when did difficult tip over into delicious?*** </center> I took a poetry workshop a few days ago, but I was the only person in my hillbilly town to sign up. The program director decided to sit in on the class, so there were two of us writing poems. We were instructed to write haiku in the 5/7/5 form. I managed to toss a few off in the time we were allotted to write one (speed haiku), and they were pretty good! ***an overcast morn I sip a cup of coffee while writing haiku*** ***time passes slowly in a small town arts center as leaves flutter down*** **when will poppies come? after frittilaria but before lilies** There was some discussion as to whether the word "while" has one syllable or two, so we decided to pronounce it with an American southern accent, "wahl." I donโt speak any Japanese, and am not sure why Japanese haiku require more syllables than those in English do, but Iโm wondering if that has anything to do with pesky words such as articles, conjunctions and prepositions. So, I have rewritten those three haiku without as many pesky words, and tried to make decent haiku out of them. I like these much better; more is left to the reader's imagination. I have also been smitten with a desire to insert kigo into my tiny poems, without spelling out the season. How do you think I did here?: ***overcast morn, steaming coffee, haiku appear*** ***leaves flutter time passes slowly coffee shop*** ***poppies - first frittilaria then lilies*** I wrote a few other things in the workshop, but my favorite is this limerick: <center>***My closet holds plenty of coats, my backyard is chock full of goats, but if I put on my rubbers and have eaten some blubber my stomach has way too much bloat!***</center> </center></center> Thank you so much for reading my tiny poems! <center>*[image](https://pixabay.com/es/photos/flor-amapola-naturaleza-planta-4266754/) by Dean Moriarty, @wales*</center>

I had a conversation with a man (who was presumably from Okinawa) about kigo over the weekend and he said that in Okinawa they basically canโt use them. Itโs like living in Florida or Mexico or somewhere else tropical where there is basically one season, so the typical Japanese kigo words often canโt be used there. The Japanese language reads and functions so differently than English. I think even with their very brief, very image based poems that they still read like full sentences. Often with Japanese, things arenโt marked as specifically as they are in English so you naturally fill in the gaps whereas with English, without the particles and pronouns, etc. weโre often left scratching our heads. With the workshop poems, my preference falls somewhere between the two versions.

I try to get around to reading all the poems, but I sometimes miss some. Please feel free to tag me if you have any haiku questions next time so I don't miss them (or so my chances of missing them decrease, anyway). The rules for syllables is very arbitrary. Most English speakers who haven't studied in depth will say it's necessary. Most haiku scholars disagree. But you know how that works. People who learn a little but not a lot will argue until they are blue in the face. So thus the 5/7/5 "requirement" in English haiku. I ignore these people, but they are usually very loud so I understand it's tough for people who don't know as much about the form to ignore. All that said, if you want to stick to using the 5/7/5 count, you are the judge of how many syllables a word has. So using the southern "wahl" is fine. The main thing is 5/7/5 in Japanese is much *shorter* than 5/7/5 in English. One word in Japanese can be 5 mora (not a syllable), so that wipes out the entire first line right there. As a result of this, yeah, the Japanese often (but not always) drops prepositions. Japanese doesn't have articles. They won't drop conjunctions, but they will try to reword the haiku not to need them. I wrote a post about this once. See: https://peakd.com/hive-161465/@dbooster/seventeen-syllables-the-form-of I love all of these: **_overcast morn, steaming coffee, haiku appear_** **_leaves flutter time passes slowly coffee shop_** **_poppies - first frittilaria then lilies_** Well done!!

haha I saw your poem and have to set aside time to read it! Now that the raspberry jelly is jelling (lord canning foods is soooo time consuming!), I plan to get back there. I'm sure I will love it, I love the way you both write and think, so a poem of yours can't go wrong.

Beautiful collection. poppies - first frittilaria then lilies This one is powerful. Japanese haiku is written in kanji(Chinese Characters); this means that in addition to the literal meaning there is also a pictorial meaning. The syllable thing is generally thought of as a western affectation but it does create lovely rhythm. The key to really functional haiku from my understanding is 3 things ... (1)it must be linked to nature/season ... (2)brevity ... (3)and have at least 2 meanings, literal and analogous. Haiku is about metaphor. Through metaphor it serves enlightenment. Your works are ALL enlightening.

Oh my! Thank you! Coming from you, that is quite the compliment! Would you say, then, that haiku written in Japanese often have more "meanings" than those written in English, without any images? My understanding has been that in Japanese, the 5/7/5 structure is required. Most translations into English, though, have fewer syllables, sometimes very few. I wonder how much is lost. I've gotten a bit better at reading them in Japanese, but still often need an explanation for a piece to become clearer.

Yeah, I agree with @prydefoltz. I told you about the fallacy of 5/7/5 in English haiku in my other comment, so see there. As to the kanji thing: yeah, totally. Kanji can give a separate image. Now in haiku, as opposed to other Japanese poetry (like tanka), word play and playing with meaning via kanji is generally avoided, but it is possible (and is incredibly common in pre-modern tanka). Kanji also give a "rougher" meaning. For both these reasons, many times a Japanese haiku poet will avoid a word in kanji and will instead write it in kana to give it a softer feel and eliminate the possibility of a misunderstanding. I usually avoid pointing out this stuff, but occasionally I do mention it in my haiku translation posts. (Kanji are Chinese characters, those ideograms in Japanese, whereas the two kana scripts are phonetic).

My understanding is the syllable count is a whole lost in translation thing. But I could be wrong. Haiku is a hotly contested subject in English. But even English haiku should have multiple meanings to capture the spirit of haiku. There should be a pivot or aha moment ... the moment of enlightenment. Your haiku did ... First there are poppies ... they signify death, but also the end of hostilities fritterlaria ... sounds like frolicking /checkered existence then you have the peace of lilies So we have seasonal/nature observation and we also have metaphorical narrative. You read Kanji ... that is amazing. Did you teach there or are Japanese? I lived near Hiroshima for a while.

> poppies - first frittilaria then lilies It's a lovely exercise, to write first and then scratch the little words. It's the rough wood bowl, sanded and whittled and polished.
