The family meeting turned into a heated discussion. Mrs. Jide turned to her daughter Nini and said, I don't know where you learned that from, but I know it's certainly not from me, your mother. I want you to know that a man's desire for respect is innate, Nini. Even a toddler wouldn't like it when you don't respect him. 

Mrs. Jide continued,  I know respect is a two-way thing, but I also want you to know that men, in particular, often tie their self-worth to respect. It's essential for building trust, intimacy, and strong, lasting relationships.

Nini disagreed, "But Mummy, shouldn't he earn my respect first? Just like you said, respect is a two-way thing, so I won't just give it to him blindly; he also needs to respect me.


Mrs. Jide smiled knowingly. "Of course, respect should be earned. However, for any healthy relationship to thrive, it must involve mutual respect, trust, and communication. This isn't anything close to blind obedience; it's about valuing each other's perspectives and boundaries."
