Con todo lo que había acontecido en St. Mary’s Stadium por la ida, Newcastle tenía que recibir la visita del Southampton a St. James Park para el encuentro decisivo por el boleto a Wembley; Los Magpies supieron sacar la ventaja en casa de los Saints con un gol de Joelinton al 73’ y la cosa quedó calentita en aquel partido tras la expulsión de Caleta-Car de la cual Jacob Murphy se mofó con una seña de “adiós” que indignó al entorno de los Saints al completo.
Para el encuentro de vuelta en St. James Park, Nathan Jones cambió el dibujo táctico de su equipo alineando una línea de 5 con Bednarek en la central para cubrir la baja Caleta-Car por suspensión y Bree como lateral por derecha para que Lyanco volviese a sus labores como defensor central. 47 años tenía el Newcastle sin llegar a una final de la Leagues (Carabao) Cup, y han aprovechado la ventaja conseguida en calidad de visitante y un arranque ciclónico en casa para aplastar a los Saints y volver a instalarse en una final de Copa de la mano de Eddie Howe y un par de goles tempraneros de Longstaff que encaminaron la eliminatoria. Los Saints que habían dado una sorpresa mayúscula dejando al City en el camino, sucumbieron ante la efectividad de los Magpies.
Las Urracas saltaron al terreno de juego con la convicción absoluta de abonarse a la final de Wembley, la necesidad de subsanar esa sequía de títulos es grande y eso se ha hecho notar en el rendimiento del conjunto de Howe de principio a fin de la primera parte. Vueltas da el balón como vueltas da la vida, y la los Magpies han conseguido su pase de vuelta a una final -tras 24 años de ausencia en tales instancias-. En 1999 sucumbieron ante el que -muy probablemente- será nuevamente su rival en Wembley, aquella ocasión se disputaban la final de la FA Cup y un par de goles de (Teddy Sheringham 11’ y Paul Scholes 53’) fueron suficientes para que los Red Devils se coronasen ante las Urracas y la sequía se extendiera; una sequía que el Newcastle buscará -de darse lo previsto- aliviar ante un United que también llega con su propio estado de urgencia de títulos.
Con los dientes afilados y el hambre a flor de piel arrancaron los locales buscando hacer daño pronto a la visita y así evitar cualquier posible viso de alguna rebelión por parte del conjunto dirigido por Nathan Jones. El balón que está lleno de historias increíbles deparaba una noche mágica para uno de los graduados de las categorías inferiores del conjunto albinegro. Sean Longstaff firmaría un formidable doblete para llevar a los suyos de vuelta a Wembley. Antes de cumplirse el minuto 5 de hostilidades, Trippier cedió para Longstaff dentro del área y este, con un derechazo rasante, venció la estirada de Bazunu para firmar el 2-0 en el global.

Al minuto 21’ volverían a la carga los de Eddie Howe, que con una buena combinación por el costado izquierdo terminarían encontrando el segundo tanto con el pase retrasado de Almirón buscando a Longstaff que confirmaba su gran noche en estado de gracia para firmar el 3-0 que se antojaba irremontable para el conjunto del Southampton, y así fue, porque el descuento que Che Adams firmó al 29’ iba a ser insuficiente para cualquier aspiración del conjunto Saint.
Con el 3-1 global al descanso, el Southampton necesitaba dos goles en los 45’ finales para forzar la prórroga y buscar su boleto a Wembley, sin embargo, el Newcastle resistió bien los envites del rival mediante un inspirado Nick Pope.
