El Estadio Azteca, al Sur de la siempre caótica Ciudad de México, un orbe tan indómito como irrefrenable, era el marco perfecto para aquel partido que reeditaba -con tintes mucho menos beligerantes- un capítulo histórico, una rencilla añeja, la Guerra de las Malvinas. Aquel Coloso de la Colonia Santa Úrsula, Coapa, asentado en la Delegación Coyoacán era ya uno de los Templos Sagrados del Balompié, y en aquella tarde en que ingleses y argentinos chocaban por los cuartos de final de una Copa del Mundo se escribiría uno de sus capítulos más sagrados.

En juego un boleto a las Semifinales del Mundial de 1986 y la tensión adicional que genera cualquier conflicto geopolítico; las Malvinas aderezaban el ambiente en el Estadio Azteca aquel 22 de junio de 1986.

Una primera parte intrascendente, en la que lo más destacado fue la temprana cartulina amarilla a Terry Fenwick. No habría nada más que contar, salvo que la tensión en el aire era tan densa que podía cortarse con un cuchillo. 

Todo lo que vendría en la segunda mitad es simplemente inolvidable, minutos que entronizarían la figura de Diego Armando Maradona como una deidad para la feligresía albiceleste; aquella tarde en durante la segunda parte ocurrieron dos cosas que nadie -incluso quienes no habían nacido aún- en el mundo del futbol podrían ignorar u olvidar; el D10S de la Argentina obró sus milagros, primero en un acto de pillería infernal, después, con una divina obra de arte que el mismísimo Leonardo Da Vinci habría deseado poder inmortalizar en algún fresco.

Seis minutos de juego en aquella segunda mitad inolvidable, y Diego, mediante la pillería anotaba un gol que tendría con los años una metamorfosis, una revolución romantizada, un acto políticamente incorrecto cuya incorreción habría de diluirse para convertirse en la dulzura de un pueblo que en el balón buscaba su revancha. Diego encaró, siempre lo hacía y buscó al poeta del balón -Valdano aún le pegaba a la pelota, aún no escribía relatos dulces en torno a ella- cuyo deficiente control fue la ocasión perfecta para un mal rechace de Steve Hodge que Diego aprovecharía para firmar, ante Peter Shilton, la infamia más celebre de la historia, nacía “La Mano de Dios”.

Diego recorrió 52 metros con la bola hechizada y pegadita a sus pies, 44 pasos para 12 toques al balón, en el camino quedaron varados ante “el Pelusa” 7 futbolistas ingleses: Peter Beardsley, Glenn Hoddle, Peter Reid, Kenny Sansom, Terry Butcher, Terry Fenwick y Peter Shilton. 114,580 almas presentes en el Estadio Azteca y una narración épica en el incomparable relato de Víctor Hugo Morales todo para el gol más bello que se recuerde en la historia de las Copas de Mundo:
