A large fresh water reservoir has two types of drainage system: small pipes and large pipes. 6 large pipes, on their own, can drain the reservoir in 12 hours. 3 large pipes and 9 small pipes, at the same time, can drain the reservoir in 8 hours. How long will 3 small pipes take to drain the reservoir? The winner is the first correct answer. After 7 days the runners up will be randomly selected. So the answer is 36 hours. The simplest way I can think to explain its is as follows: 6 Large pipes take 12 hours so 3 large would take 24 hours (twice as long). Or 1 large 72 hours (6 times as long). So time taken is 72 divided by amount of large pipes. 3 Large and 9 small take 8 hours. Here 72 divided by 8 hours gives equivalent amount of large pipes, 9. However there a 3 large and 9 small that work the same. So 9 small work the same as 6 large. 3 small must work the same as 2 large. So 72 hours divide by 2 (equivalent amount of large pipes) is 36 hours. So the winner is @izaid! Well done. Rewards have now been paid.
