What? that's rather absurd! Who wouldn't want a promotion?

I know, it's not everyday we come across such a topic, especially since a lot of people work hard enough to earn a raise and scale up that corporate ladder with time. I know i work hard and i'd be pleased to get a promotion, (If i had a job, that is).

What's not to love about getting promoted? It comes with a lot of added benefits. You get a bigger paycheck, your CV looks a bit better, you get to be addressed differently and probably get a new office. It could extend to other parts of your life too such as more time off work to spend with family and friends or on things that are important to you other than work. Why wouldn't anyone want a raise? 

Well, let's speak for ourselves. Not all promotions are appealing in every sense of the word, and there are a couple of people who might not want to get promoted at work for a lot of reasons. 

First off, getting promoted at work most times involves new or additional sets of responsibilities, pressure, and changes. You might be directly responsible for some extra set of things and that puts you directly under the watch of your employers. The pressure to deliver results might be daunting and If you're least-prepared to accommodate such changes (no matter how competent or skilled you are), it might be worth considering a decline. Also, if you have a focus-extensive project going on after work (say, some serious academic program), it might be a bit of struggle taking on new set of responsibilities at work.

Other times, turning down a promotion might just be about the nature of the job or the dream and plans of the individual. I might turn down a promotion at a workplace if i feel it's more of a temporary job than a career i'm willing to pursue.

There's also a lot of people who enjoy working behind the scenes than being in the limelights! They enjoy the creativity of their little crucible and are content with the dividends/pay check they receive for their honest work. Such people might turn down a promotion if they don't find it interesting. etc etc etc...

So, i guess the topic isn't nearly as insane as you might have thought at first.
That said, it's not healthy to say yes to something you really don't want for yourself, even if it's a promotion at work. So, how do express that lightly to your boss without making yourself feel ungrateful? Everyone can't be a boss. If everyone should do that, who will they employ to work for them?Also, I have heard about people who would rather be an employee than be an employer, some people can't handle the responsibilities that comes with being a boss.

Pan this is an awesome article. Honestly, not every opportunity is meant to be taken, I personally treasure my freedom so I weigh opportunities in most instances so I can go for  one that gives me peace.

Absolutely! That's the best thing to do! There are some good things that turn out to be so stressful and unproductive in the end. Lol. Or they take you away from some of the important things in life.

In my opinion, before getting a promotion we should try to change jobs, most of the times because we have experience in the sector we can get a better pay with the same responsibilities simply by changing from one workplace to another! Only after we get a good foundation should we accept promotions...
And always keep in our minds that we should work to live and not live to work!

Cannot say i agree with you 100% on that one but i guess experience in these things go a long way. I have read of people who only had to do one job outta college and they went on to become a force there.

I agree with you on this one though. lol. Today's labour market isn't what it's supposed to be. People should work and then have enough money and enough time to spend on other important things of life. The 9 to 5 daily routine kills that.

LOL. We hardly say no to a lot of things. It's hard to recognize what to say no to, especially if it's good, but there are some 'good' that just takes the place of something better. But of course, it won't be realistic to pass every opportunity. We're not assured of anything better. LOL. We can only hope.
