WE102: Bedside Accoutrements

## Bedside Accoutrements

This was an extremely interesting #weekend-engagment writing prompt [this week](https://peakd.com/hive-168869/@galenkp/we102-weekend-engagement-concept) as I am a big believer in the theory that much knowledge can be gained about a person based upon their dress, surroundings, and items they choose to keep close.  I’m hoping that by sharing my bedside accoutrements you all get a little better peek into who I am ………remember what I do for a living as that will explain some of the items and not the fact that I’m a raging sociopath…lololol

I will work from closest to my reach to furthest as far as the items and why they are there.  I guess the closest thing to me would be my phone and charging cord as I’m on call most all the time and, even when sleeping, my personality is the guy that can always be contacted. I have my phone set to silent between 9pm and 5:45 am except for incoming calls from numbers that are already stored on my phone.  That way I’m not bothered by texts, solicitation calls, or app messages while sleeping. 

Directly behind my phone against the wall is my biometric 2-gun safe where I store my duty pistol and EDC pistol when they are not in use.  For most of my life, I just kept them open at the bedside for quicker access, but now that we have the grandkids and they stay over from time to time, I invested in this small gun safe. It operates off reading the fingerprint from one of several of my fingerprints stored inside.

Next, we come to a wooden caddy my daughter bought me for a Father’s Day present some years ago and it holds miscellaneous items and business cards.  From there, it depends on what day you look at it but usually items I need for work or EDC such as various knives, car keys, pens, belt keepers, my watch,  and my work door access badge.  In the above picture, those are all absent because I was still in uniform and had all my gear on my person...lololol

My wife hates having anything out showing when not in use, so she bought me a cool fabric box where I store antacids, a couple of Bibles, a change jar, and my EDC paddle holster.  Beside that is a bedside lamp that is hooked into our Alexa system so my phone can turn it on and off when needed.  Against the far wall is a set of hooks and a chair.  The hooks are for my inner uniform belt and my duty belt that, thanks to the miracle of external load-bearing vests, only has my work pistol holster on it. On the chair is where I keep my work uniform for the next day and my boots go under the front edge of the chair. 

I won’t go into the contents of the inside of the bedside table, but suffice it to say there is enough stuff in there to survive a moderate zombie apocalypse….lololol  And for further clarification, if it were not for my wife that side of the bed would look much, much messier and disheveled....but happy wife equals happy life...lololol Thanks for taking the time to take a peek into one of my intimate surroundings and remember that I love you all and there should always be some type of defensive items next to your bed.

As it should be 😊! 

Storage totes like that are very useful, I do find that with me they tend to accumulate random stuff though and every few weeks I have to empty them out and put everything back in it's correct place. My kiddo also loves adding random toys to them (and annoyingly sometimes half eaten apples for some reason) hahaha

Hey....you never know when you might need that half eaten apple.  If it is left in there enough you have some dried fruit for survival situation and where in the world do you think the seeds are going to come from to repopulate the Earth with apple trees if you throw out every half-eaten apple????   lololol

This is so inconvenient. Way more efficient to leave things out, strewn around the house, so they are easily and readily accessible for when they are needed. Why do women not see this? It's the same as bed making. *Just going to get into it tonight so why make it!*

It's funny how bedside tables ultimately reflect who we are. I guess we can't help but be overtaken by our jobs - although, let me ask: does the wife feel safer having a couple of guns near the bed? I guess in asking the question, I suppose I am asking, do you live in the kind of neighbourhood where people pop up in bedrooms in the night? (@Galenkp would probably enjoy this popping of guns euphemistic banter, I'm sure).

I don't believe this to be a factor, as PC could attest to as a cop, I'm sure. Crime isn't limited to poor socio-economic demographics and some of the most violent of crimes (home invasions) here and abroad happen across many suburbs, good and bad. 

If I woke up and found someone in my bedroom at night, an intruder, they'd be best to kill me there and then because if they do not it won't go well for them. Do the people in my household feel safer knowing I'm capable of acting, and willing to protect? *Yes.* I can't speak for PC's wife however I'm sure you'd get a yes answer there also. 

We live in a terrible world Tim, and no matter where we go, good suburbs or bad, there's someone looking to take advantage. I don't watch the news, but I'm sure it's all laid out plainly there.

I don't think that is what makes her feel safe.......I think it is probably the fact that she has her own safe on her side of the bed with her own EDC pistol in it....lolololol

And as Galen so eloquently put it...(im paraphrasing of course) EVERY neighborhood is one where people could be popping up in bedrooms...lolol

If you put things away then you can't find them!
I know exactly where you are coming from. 
Being from the UK, we still find the whole gun situation strange, ever our cops don't normally have them.
Many years ago when I was in the States riding in father-in-laws pick up truck, he asked me to get something from the glove box, I nearly had a fit when my hand felt a cold revolver🤣 He was roaring with laughter knowing I would be shocked, he nearly ran us off the road!
They used to keep a shotgun under the bed, but my mother-in-law did make him get a gun cabinet once they had their grandkids over to the house.
