I saw the movie called **Retro**. *Karthik Subbaraj* directed it. *Surya* is there and *Pooja Hegde* is in the lead role.
What did this started *Surya* back to back? The more I keep hoping for him, the more I get disappointed. A few days ago, **Kanguva**, now a movie like **Retro**. If you don't sit down to watch it, the movie will test your patience. Watching this movie is a challenge.

*Karthik Subbaraj* has made this movie. Such a good director, casting like *Surya*, *Pooja Hegde* is there, there are big actors like *Prakash Raj* here. Brother, what a movie he has made. You should watch this movie without sitting down.
When you watch the whole story, you will say "What is happening?" It is showing the same thing again and again. I think *Surya* doesn't even look at the script before choosing the script - where am I signing, what script am I choosing, will this script be good or not, will people like it or not.
What do I know, brother, has *Surya* lost his mind or not. What do I know! A good actor, you won't find any flaws in his acting. His acting is absolutely pure. But his script selection is so, what does it mean, level of disgusting - I don't understand why Surya is choosing such a script. He is such a good actor, we want to see him in good movies. But he is providing such movies back to back.
## What is the story?
A gangster, he wants to quit fighting. He has fallen in love with someone. He wants to quit fighting in love. He wants to marry her and live happily. He is going to get married. The marriage is not happening. There are problems. He is fighting. His wife is leaving him. *Surya* is going to jail. He is coming out of jail. Again he says I will be good. Again his wife is giving him a chance. Another problem comes, again *Surya* is fighting, again they are separated. This is shown in the whole movie.
This is the story of the movie. Now what, why, how—nothing will enter your mind.
### Positive Aspects
Now let's talk about the positive and negative aspects of this movie.
First of all, as I said, *Surya's* performance is flawless. Why should I talk about *Surya* alone? All the other performers here are good. The villain roles that he played here have all played very well. He tried to pull off the movie with his performance as much as possible. Surya has tried a lot to pull it off with his performance.
But, how long can a hero carry the movie on his own shoulders, when his writing and execution are at such a level?
Surya has tried, everyone else has tried to pull it off with his performance. The performance is good. The BGM is very good. The BGM is unusual, and it is nice to see the places where the BGM has been brought to the right place. The movie uplifts there.
The BGM that stops, the movie falls flat again. The BGM is quite good. And the era that has been created here, since it shows the retro—the retro era—money has been spent on that era. The era has been created well. Since there was no such problem with the budget, the budget has been poured in and they have created that era well.
This was the positive side.
### Negative Aspects
Now I will come to the negative side. What kind of writing is this? Where I am putting all the elements in the movie, but I am not able to show anything. This movie has everything—emotion, drama, romance, action, mythological elements. Everything is there.
But nothing is being shown properly.
Here the movie starts with a world—*Surya's* world, where Surya is trying to get out of. That world was shown. Suddenly later it shifted to romance. The world did not build-up. Romance came like a gust of wind. Romance came like a gust of cold wind, and immediately flew away.
No time for romance. He went to jail. He came out of jail. He goes to another world. There is no world-building there. His girlfriend keeps leaving him, keeps catching him. *Surya* keeps saying I will leave him, keeps beating him. These things are repeated over and over.
You will not get anything new. Here, things are cut and pasted one scene after another. There is no rhythm in it. That, well, this thing happened, then the thing built-up, then the emotion went, then the action went.
The actions are happening, there is no reason behind it.
The emotional hooks that will be there—for example, the relationship between a son and a father, the relationship between a girlfriend and a boyfriend—are not working at all. The drama portion is not working at all. The characters are not built up so that you can feel a connection with them.
Even where there is action, the action is not very good or out-of-the-box. Regular South action, a story about a gangster trying to get out, not being able to get out, getting stuck in the same place again and again—we have seen such stories many times.
#### What is new in this story?
The treatment shown here is not new. I just built up a world—where everyone is listening to music, dancing, a party atmosphere. There are some people who are very poor, in a completely helpless situation. A hero comes and saves them.
A better movie could have been made with this story, but its execution is so bad, the story is being turned upside down in the same place—the emotion is not working somewhere, the drama is not working, you don't get anything new in the action.
If the same thing keeps happening over and over again, what will you watch?
In the entire movie, let's say the writing of this movie, let's say the execution—everything is not given the time it should have. Everything is a mess. It looks lengthy, it looks boring.
Its running length, that's what you feel. And here the actions don't provide you with any different hook moments or twists and turns—that will keep you engaged or give you some good scenes, moments that you will enjoy—there's nothing like that.
You can just see *Surya's* performance, you can see the look & feel because they gave the budget, and the BGM is good here—you can see that.
There's no point in watching this movie without these three.
#### Final Verdict
I'm seriously disappointed. I liked the trailer. I had hopes for this movie. I never thought I would get a movie like this.
I will tell *Surya*, now watch it and choose the script. Because your fans want you to make a comeback. But you won't make a comeback with a movie like this. It won't be serious.
